Princess MARGRED ferch Madog of Powys

ABT 1129 - ____

ID Number: I27588

  • TITLE: Princess
  • RESIDENCE: Wales
  • BIRTH: ABT 1129, Montgomeryshire, Wales
  • RESOURCES: See: Notes [S1024] [S2237]
Father: MADOG ap Maredudd of Powys
Mother: SUSANNA ferch Gruffydd ap Cynan GWYNEDD

Family 1 : IORWERTH Drwyndwn ab Owain GWYNEDD of Wales
  1. +LLYWELYN ap Iorwerth Fawr "The Great" of North Wales

Notes

"Margred ferch Madog [JC.29] [Note: It has been suggested, on the basis of a statement in Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (6:497), in which Llywelyn refers to a certain Walter Corbet as "frater Willielmi Corbet avunculi mei", that Llywelyn's mother was a Corbet. (See, for example, Meisel's Barons of the Welsh Frontier, which, however, does not even mention the Welsh version of Llywelyn's maternity in JC.) However, as the source of JC.29 appears to have been written during Llywelyn's lifetime, and there are others ways in which an
uncle-nephew relationship between William Corbet (an obscure individual) and Llywelyn could be explained, there seems to be no good reason to reject the statement of JC.29 regarding the identity of Llywelyn's mother.]"

William Crispen of Royal Navy and Anne (Jasper, d/o William, an English merchant of Amsterdam; sister of Margaret, wife of Admiral Sir Wm. Penn, parents of Wm. Penn of PA.);

*Colonial Famileis of The US, Vol VI, pg 430, 1917
*The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stocktons, Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton, 1911, pg 10; gives same info as Cregar.; cites Rev. William Frost Crispin, of Akron, OH, who gave him book, "Capt. William Crispin and the Crispin Family"

*Colonial Families of PA, John W. Jordan; Gen. Pub. Co, 1978: "Silas, son of Capt. William and Anne (Jasper) Crispin, probably accompanied his father in the unfortunate voyage which ended at Barbadoes. He first arrived in PA with Capt. Thomas Holme, Surveyor General, in the ship "Amity", of London. On his arrival, he no doubt lived with Capt. Holme's family at Shackamaxon; within a year he married the latter's daughter, Esther, and in 1684 they went to live on his plantation on Pennepack Creek, upper part of Dublin Twsp. He soon built a house and lived there the remained of his life. In deeds, etc., he is styled "Silas Crispin of Dublin Twsp, Gentleman." He was a member of the Free Society of Traders in PA. He was executor of the will of his father-in-law, Capt. Thomas Holme, and spent a great deal of time in caring for the large interests in land left by the latter; obtaining warrants for laying out lands not taken up at Holme's death, selling some of the tracts, etc. Silas Crispin died 31 May 1711.

By his will, dated 5 May 1711, he made his wife, Mary executrix, left her his negroes, household goods, etc., and directed her to sell 100 acres which he bought from Robert Grismall, adjoining the north end of his plantation to pay debts and legacies.

To his son, Thomas he left a mare and colt and some small articles.
To his granddau. Sarah Loftus, and his sister, Rebecca Blackfan, he left sums of money.

Witnesses were Margaret Ashton, William Blackfan and Robert Ashton. Mary renounced her executorship, 5 Jul 1711, and letters of Administration cum testamento annexo were granted Thomas Crispin, 19 Apr 1714. His landed estate is not mentioned in his will, his own plantation going by the law of the time to his son, Thomas, while the other children by his first wife were heirs; through their mother to Capt. Thomas Holme's large domain.

His children by his 2nd wife were quite young, and he probably expected them to be provided for by their mother, whose family was wealthy. After her husband's death, Mary Crispin, with her children, returned to Burlington, NJ, where she lived before her marriage."
*Betty Harris, 5/91; PA Mag. of Hist. and Bio., Vol LIII, 1929, No. 3, pg 97 to end; says mother was Rebecca Bradshaw NIECE of Adm. William Penn. (see father's notes) b. c1655 in England; married Hester Holme by 1683. She died 17 Apr 1696 and he married 2nd 1697, Mary Stockton."
