He occupied and held the fort for the Union Army in order to
collect import and export taxes from the ships arriving and
departing Charleston, against the wishes of the peoples of South
Carolina. When Lincoln sent a ship to supply the fort with guns
and miltary, the Charleston forces fired on Fort Sumter.
Afterwards Lincoln used the firing on Fort Sumter as an excuse
for all out war and requested all states provide soldiers to
overtake South Carolina - many other states then quit Lincoln's
Union and joined the Confederate States of America - Robert E.
Lee was offered the command of Lincoln's Army and refused
because he would not make war on his neighbors, he resigned his
commision and returned to Virginia. jb
