Mother: Elizabeth MARSTON |
It was this Thomas Marston Green that persuaded the state of
Georgia to pass the Bourbon Act of 1785 that created the largest
county in American history. You may recall that Natchez was held
by the Spanish at that time, having received it in a secret
treaty in 1763 just before the French admitted losing what we
call the French and Indian War.
Col. Thomas Marston Green bravely arrived in Natchez as a
Commissioner of Georgia and told the Spanish, who had just
announced the closing of the Mississippi River to American
shiping, that they should leave the area, as it belonged to the
state of Georgia. The Spanish Governor promptly threw Col.
Thomas M. Green into jail, but he was later released, and did
become very prominent in the Natchez area. History records that
Col. Thomas Marston Green married Andrew Jackson and Rachel
Donelson in the plantation home of his son in 1791. This
plantation stands today as Springfield Plantation on the Natchez
Trace.
The article in Volume 6, series 2 of the William & Mary
Quarterly does not give the end of the story, except to say that
Gen. Andrew Jackson married Rachel Donnilson in 1791 in Col.
Thomas Green's home. The article says that Col. Thomas Green
married the future President of the United States in his
capacity as a territoral official. Col. Thomas Marston Green
died in 1805 and is burried in Natchez, Mississippi." TBGreen3

"In about 1772, Col. Thomas Marston Green, the grandson of
Thomas "The Sea Gull" Green, came to the Natchez area to visit
his friend, Col. Anthony Hutchins, who had received a 250,000
acre land grant from the British, after serving in the French &
Indian War. Anthony Hutchins was not at home when Col. Thomas
Marston Green arrived, so for some reason, he left his 11 year
old son, Abner Green with the overseer of the plantation and
went to Georgia
to persuade the legislature to pass the Bourbon Act, which they
did in 1785, making Bourbon County, Mississippi the largest
county ever created in America. Col. Green then returned to
Natchez and told the Spanish, who had taken over the area since
he left, to leave. Not only did the Spanish throw Col. Green in
jail, for his efforts, but he found that his son, Abner Green
had
married Mary Hutchins in 1784, and they had built a brick
plantation home on part of the Hutchins Plantation in 1785, and
it is believed to be the oldest brick home in Mississippi.
Andrew and Jean Peabody purchased Oakland Plantation in 1955 and
have restored the old brick home as a Bread & Breakfast. They
have also restored a large frame home next door to the old brick
home, which was originally built by Abner and Mary Hutchins
Green for their son, William Green, but William died before the
home was completed, and his three sisters lived in the home for
many years.
These were the homes where Rachel Donelson came in 1789 to
escape the jealousy of her husband, Lewis Robards. Rachel was
related by marriage to the Hutchins family, and Andrew Jackson
was a business partner of several of the brothers of Abner
Green."
