Notes

"The family of James P. Collins and his first wife Eliza G. Ainsworth arrived in DeWit Co., in 1851. As a resident of DeWitt Co., James was a farmer, slave owner, Master Mason, sheriff and Justice of the Peace. The family lived in DeWitt County about ten years.
Born in 1816 in Wayne Co., MS, he was the son of Christopher Collins and Rachel Hendricks. About 1837 he married Eliza G. Ainsworth who was born 11 Feb 1809 in MS Territory, probably in the area which later became Washington Co., AL.
On 24 Oct 1838 James, family and his brothers-in-law, Asbury and Jeptha Ainsworth, arrived in the Republic of Texas.
The Collins and Ainswirth families settled in Liberty Co., where each were granted 640 acres on the Trinity River. This area became part of Polk Co., when it was established in 1846 and is presently in San Jacinto Co. They lived near the town of Swartwout. James was elected Justice of the Peace in Polk Co., and was among the first men to hold office as his name appears on page one of the Polk Co. Commissioner's Court Records dated 7 Sept 1846. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Cold Spring, present Coldspring, San Jacinto Co., TX. In 1851, he resigned his commission and moved to DeWitt Co., TX.
Justice George Monroe Reese, Jr. had married James niece, Lucy Hendricks Collins and their family also made the move to DeWitt Co., about the same time.
James was elected as Sheriff of DeWitt Co and joined the Coletto Creek Masonic Lodge #124 in Yorktown. He also held the office of Justice of the Peace. He owned land in Yorktown, Cuero and along Five Mile Colleto Creek and Twelve Mile Coletto Creek."
