Newman, Clearfield Company, Inc. 1997, page 301: A case before
the Chancery Court of Maryland, filed on July 24, 1798 by Zereal
Penn and Burford Cotterel, showed that in 1764, John Warren and
William Penn, both of Charles County, since deceased became the
surieties for Robert Yates, the administrator of Jonathan Yates,
to the value of 1,200 pounds. Zereal Penn was the only brother
and representative of William Penn who at his
death left no issue, and Burford Cotterel was the husband of
Anne, the daughter of executor of John Warren, deceased. Robert
Yates died without settling the estate of Jonathan Yates, and
the said Robert Yates left an only daughter Anne, unmarried,
aged 40, deaf, dumb, and non compos mentis.
