Genealogy of the Lea Family
Leasburg, Caswell Co., N. C.
About 1760 two brothers James & William Lea from the eastern
portion of VA, settled in North Carolina in what is now known as
Caswell & Person counties. James Lea located about 2 miles west
of Leasburg, a village subsequently established and named after
the family, & was the county seat of Caswell before Person was
set off. Person county was formed from Caswell in 1791. Caswell
from Orange in 1777. Orange from Granville in 1751. The
settlement of the two brothers was made in what was then Orange
County. William Lea settled three miles East of Leasburg at
South Hycote bridge, near Lea's Chapel, which was a church of
England establishment, now a Methodist Chapel. A third brother,
or near kinsman of these two settled on Country line Creek some
? miles west of Leasburg, from him sprung a numerous progeny."
