He married a 2nd time before 20 Feb 1397 to Joan Beaufort, widow
of Robert Ferrers, 2nd Baron of Wemme. His second wife, on whom
the lordships of Middleham and Sheriff-Hutton, with other
extensive lands, were settled, left them to her eldest son,
Richard, Earl of Salisbury. This caused a feud between her and
her sons on the one side, and the grandsons of her husband by
his first wife on the other, which resulted in the elder branch
espousing the cause of Lancaster, and Salisbury and his
brothers, that of York.

1st Earl of Westmoreland: "And having wedded two Wives, viz.
Margaret, Daughter of Hugh, Earl Stafford (for which Marriage, a
special Dispensation from Pope Urban the Fifth was obtained, in
regard they were within the third and fourth degrees of
Consanguinity) who dying 9 Junii, An. 1370. (44 Edw. 3.) was
buried in the Quire at Brancepath;) and Joane, the Daughter of
John of Gant, Duke of Lancaster, Widow of Sir Robert Ferrers (of
Overley) Knight (who died 13 Nov. 19 Hen.6.) and was buried at
Lincoln) departed this life in 21 Octob.4 Hen. 6. (and lieth
buried in the midst of the Quire at Staindripe, under a stately
tomb, whereon are the Figures of himself, and both his wives)
...... Leaving Ralph Nevill his Grandson (viz. Son of John, his
eldest Son, who deceased in his life time) his next heir, then
Nineteen years of age.
