OBIT: Thomas Higginbotham (1767-1835) VA Lynchburg Virginia,
Monday 02/09/1835 -at his residence, in Amherst county, on the
5th inst. Thomas Higginbotham, Esq. Formerly a merchant of this
place. Lynchburg Virginian, Monday 02/16/1835 Departed this life
Wednesday, the 4th inst. Mr. Thomas Higginbotham, of Amherst
county, in the 64th year of his age. He was brought up from
early life to the mercantile profession, which he pursued with
success, and with the confidence and esteem of all with whom he
had dealings, or knew him. He possessed a discriminating
judgment and firmness of purpose, not to be shaken, when that
judgment convinced him that he was right. He was generous and
benevolent, humane and kind to all who deserved it_no matter in
what relationship they stood to him, whether as servant,
assistant, relation or friend_and charitable to the poor.
Through life he observed an undeviating regard to truth, so much
so as to disdain to deceive, even by a smile.May all living men
practice his virtues. If he had failings, (and who has not?)
they emanated chiefly from the goodness of his heart. If he was
not a christian, he possessed the virtues of one, and more than
thousands who call themselves such. The writer of this knew him
long and intimately_and in this short sketch, of his character,
has, he believes, followed his own great example of a rigid
adherence to truth, without which, indeed, there is no virtue.
A very old abandoned cemetery containing many graves marked with
flint rock head stones, has a lone legible monument marking the
grave of Thomas Higginbotham, born 6/10/1769, died 2/4/1835.
This Thomas was a bachelor, the oldest son of John Jr. and
Rachel Banks and grandson of John and Frances Riley. The will of
this Thomas indicates that he was a man of considerable means
and was probably a banker due to his bequests of much bank
stock. The records show that he was a resident of Campbell
County, Virginia and possibly lived in Lynchburg about 12 miles
from this cemetery. It is probable that he was buried here
because his ancestors had established this as the family burying
ground. Nearby and in an adjacent spur of a ridge stands a very
old residence now abandoned. This was probably the home of John
Jr. and Rachel Banks. A short distance to the southwest is
Ebenezer Church which was erected in 1771. In the division of
the estate in 1751, a tract of 204 acres was allotted to Aaron
Higginbotham Sr. who conveyed this 204 acres to William Cabell
and Cornelius Thomas, church wardens in 1762. Thereon is
Ebenezer Church. The old cemetery and old residence is on that
part allotted to John Higginbotham Jr. The above assumptions
are reasonable but can not be proven at present, other than the
monument to Thomas and Ebenezer Church and these are located on
the land conveyed to Moses in 1745."
This cemetery is listed in the "Gravestone Inscriptions in
Amherst County Virginia", Revised Edition 1999, published by the
Amherst County Museum and Historical Society, as the Whitten
Place Cemetery on page 292. The entry reads:
"Thomas Higginbotham large stone only marked grave, surrounded
by graves marked with field stones said to be the graves of his
slaves who were freed long before the "War Between the States".
"Higginbotham, Thomas, Jun 10, 1767-Feb 1835"
