"According to the historian Leland, William was sergeant to Geoffrey, Bishop of Constance, about the time of the Conquest, and about that time, according to an antient charter, for the good of the souls of himself and his wife Menialda and the souls of Ranulph, Goffreid and Morel, his sons, and all his other sons, gave the Lordship of Morwick to the monks of Durham. Morepeth Parish in almost all old writings is spelled Morepath. Sometimes it occurs in the Latinized form Morpathia. It was the "town on the path over the Moor," and has long been the head place in Morepeth ward. About the year 1240 it is described as then consisting of Morpeth, with its members "Grinewest, Ulghham. Hepscot Shilvington, Twizwell, Salrwick, Clifton, Stannington, Benton and Killingworth."
