Dear Bev,
"The Compendium of American Genealogy: The Genealogical
Encyclopedia of the First Families of America" compiled by
Frederick A. Virkus has two references to Rene St. Julien. the
"de" is not on there. The "e" was changed to "a" and the St.
dropped with his son, Issac. These books, 7 volumes in all, can
be found on the Family Tree Maker CD's, titled "The Compendium
of American Genealogy.

In the book "The Julians and Allied Families" byElizabeth Kate
Manly it says that Rene Julian was born about 1660 and was from
Vitre, Brittany, France. It has some other material about him
fighting at the Battle of the Boyne under the standard of King
William in 1690, but I do not know if this is tue or part of the
"legend" that is widely accepted. It says the earliest recorded
land transaction was in Bohemia Manor in 1720, but his being
there in 1716 is attested to by the record of his son Isaac in
1716. In 1737 the lease of his of 1720 is transferred to Henry
McCoy aqnd that is when he must have gone to Winchester, VA. It
sounds like you already have those records.A deed from typscript
record of South Carolina Indentures for 1712-1713 Charleston
p.67 lists Rene Julian Planter of Berkley to Isaac Motts on
Boowatt Creek bounds the lands of John Perry esq. It says that
the plantation was in the midst of Pierre Julian's many
plantations. Pierre may have been Rene's brother. It also says
that after the death of two young sons, Rene decided (evidently)
to move to a more favorable climate in Maryland.

i have seen the actual survey of the Boowatt creek land in the
Charleston land archives. there is no mention anywhere of the
lands of Pierre Julien- indeed if whoever wrote this meant
Pierre St Julien, all of the St Julien lands were inland in the
upper reaches of the Cooper River. Boowatt Crk was on the, what
is now called, Bull's Bay. For a visit, go to the Cape Romain
Wildlife Refuge- the land is close by.

allow me to comment on the 1700 record in England. i believe
this is a record of denization. if so, then it apparently was
not necessary for the person to actually be present. i have
tried to find out about this process- it is very confused, as
the authorities do not seem to agree on just what 'denization'
meant in those times. the surname julian was reasonably common
in England at that time. Paul Julian

Hi Bev, long time since I heard from you. I have never said that
Rene is the son of Pierre de st Julien. I don't believe it would
be possible because of the time period involved. Rene is said to
have been a French soldier who fought for William of Orange and
was given a land grant by William when he became King of
England. He was on his way to the Colonies when he stopped in
Bermuda, met & married Mary aka Margaret. When they arrived in
America they settled first in South Carolina at some point moved
to Maryland and what is now Virginia. He is buried in the oldest
Opequon Church cemetery on land donated by William Hoge.
The de St. was dropped eventually during land transactions being
carried on and the "e" changed to "a" over the years.
There are several Stephen Bullocks as his parients, William
Bullock and Patience Paynter had several children and Stephen
was her father's name. It was tradition to name children after
members of the family which is why there is so much confusion
now in trying to find the right ancestors.
My sources are "Where We Came From, the Reformed Huguenot
Heritage of the Julian Family" by David R. Julian and LeFroy's
"Memorials of Bermuda".
