Sir ROBERT BRISKO of Cumberland

ABT 1050 - ____

ID Number: I45396

  • TITLE: Sir
  • OCCUPATION: Lord of Brisco
  • RESIDENCE: co. Cumberland, England
  • BIRTH: ABT 1050
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1637] [S1647] [S3007]
Father: (Research Query) BRISCOE

Family 1 :
  1. +ALLAN BRISKO

Notes

"SIR MUSGRAVE BRISCOE, Bart., of "Crofton Hall," Wigton, Cumberland, England, is the present head of the BRISCOE family, who are said to be descended from Robert BRISKO, of Brisko, in the County of Cumberland, England, whose ancestor came to England with "William, the Conqueror," bringing with him a body of free lances from Brisque, in Saubia."

"Lord Robert Brisko of Brisko had a son Allen whose son Gordon had a son, Robert,
Robert married Matilda... in the time of Edward II, 1313."

(23rd. Generation)
Robert BRISKO, Lord of Brisco in Co. Cumberland, father of Allan above.

Briscoe

N English: habitation name from any of various places so called. Briscoe in Cumb. is so called from ON Bretaskógr ‘wood of the (Strathclyde) Britons’ (cf. Brett), whereas Brisco in Cumb. and Briscoe in N Yorks. are so called from ON birki Birch + skógr.

Brett

English and French: ethnic name for a Breton, from OF bret (oblique case breton). The Bretons were Celt.-speakers driven from SW England to NW France in the 6th cent. ad by Anglo-Saxon invaders; some of them reinvaded England in the 11th cent. as part of the army of William the Conqueror. In France and among Normans, Bretons had a reputation for stupidity, and in some cases this name and its vars. and cogns. may have originated as derogatory nicknames. The Eng. surname is most common in E Anglia, where many Bretons settled after the Conquest. In Scotland it may also denote a member of one of the Celt.-speaking peoples of Strathclyde, who were known as Bryttas or Brettas well into the 13th cent. (from Ancestry.com Dictionary of Names)

Malachi MURPHY

____ - 1773

ID Number: I99630

  • RESIDENCE: Craven Co. Williamsburg Dist SC
  • DEATH: 1773, Craven Co. South Carolina
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3616]

Family 1 : Hannah GIBSON
  1. +James MURPHY
  2.  Moses MURPHY

Notes

"Dr. Hall says that Malachi and Hannah had three sons "and seemingly a daughter who married the Rev. Alexander Bedgegood." Could her name have been Catherine; hence the Catherine Bedgegood Pegues who married William Alexander Ellerbe?

Dr. Hall says that among the early settlers at Sandy Bluff, on the Pedee, were the Murfees, Saunders, Gibsons and Crawfords. They intermarried with each other and owned valuable lands in this locality. They also married later into other prominent families and among them the Pegues and Ellerbe families.

Mrs. Lidwin says only Moses was theirs.
The Will of Malachi Murfee dated 7 Sept 1773 recorded Charleston Will Book 1776-1794, p 291, mentions all the children except (Hannah). His wife Hannah was deceased. He gives property to all the children calling them Saunders: "Malachi Saunders, son of my deceased wife Hannah;" Nathaniel Saunders ditto; James Saunders ditto; Massey Saunders--also as Marcy and Mercy-ditto and to the daughter Mercy of the deceased Elizabeth & her husband William Pegues and to the children of the Rev. N. Bedgegood wife Mary--all called children of my deceased wife Hannah. He also gives to Moses Murfee son of my deceased wife Hannah.

Marcia (Marcy, Mercy, Massey) was not married to Claudius Pegues, Jr. at that time. Evidently all the children were called Murfee and that is why he named them as Saunders. There are the Pre Rev. deeds calling them Saunders and James died as a Saunders as his estate owed some firm (Claudius Pegues , admr)

The Court Records of Marlboro Co explain this deed. Malachi Murfee (Saunders) owed someone or other and Claudius Pegues, Jr. went on his bond. When this deed was made Claudius was dead & Marcy & her children bought the slaves in question & gave them to Mary Murfee (otherwise Saunders) and her children. Note Malachi is mentioned as "our kinsman" in the deed.
