A Memorial from a Hillsboro Newspaper - November 15, 1927 (as
transcribed by KM) In Memory of W. G. Pendleton: There passed
from this to other realms on the morning of November 11, the
spirit of W. G. Pendleton, aged 75 years and 2_ days. Born near
Woodbury, Tennessee and raised in that locality until 1890, he
was married in 1874 to Miss Gilmore Duncan, who survives him.
To this union there were born seven children, three dying in
infancy. The others surviving are: Sam Pendleton of Revier,
Steve at home, and Mesdames W. E. Erwin and Rachel Ellis of
Mesquite and Millford respectively. He is also survived by 24
grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
In 1890, Mr. Pendleton came to Texas, settling near Irene, and
he had lived in Hill County ever since - making his home near
Woodbury for the past three years.
It was this writers priviledge to have known Grandpa Pendleton,
as he was affectionately called, for some years, and to have
been one of his nearest neighbors for three years. To know him
was to respect and admire him.
Strong in his own convictions, he was tolerant of the
convictions of others in religious matters and in political
matters as well. He was a natural student, a good reasoner, and
a deep thinker. He often impressed this writer with his high
ideals of life and with his smiling optimism in the face of
difficulties. All in all, he seemed to be a splendid example of
the old time southern gentleman - honorable, courteous, gentle,
and sympathetic at all times. It was a pleasure to know him.
The funeral services were conducted by Elder A. C. Nance in the
Christian church here at Woodbury, after which, the body was
laid to rest in the cemetery at Hillsboro. Peace be to his
ashes!
- A. C. Bayless
