Mother: Agnes DONNALD |
James never married, he was the youngest son of James the
immigrant. McCants, James (probably Jr.) Served in the militia
and was at the fall of Charleston. He served 115 days in the
militia during 1782. He may have been the son of the 2nd or 3rd
wife, Martha Jean Scott or Agness Donnald (not likely as James
was b ca 1760 and they m. 1772). However, he may have been
living with the 1st wife's relatives, McKneely, in LA when he
died, because the probate sale of his possessions was held at
the home of Henry McKneely and wife Jane.
Among items deducted from the gross amount was a bill from Dr.
John C. Williams for $41, which included seven visits between
Dec 15 and 20, 1815, ipepac, bleeding, cathartic, spirits,
lance, comphor, opium.
Some of his possessions sold at auction were a horse, saddle,
bridle, wearing apparel, a trunk, bedroom furniture, five
slaves. Proceeds were divided among his brothers and sisters.
to wit: Jane Lindsay, Alexander McCants, Thomas McCants, Mary
Hunt, and Nathaniel McCants. David McCants was curator. Mary
Hunt in So. Carolina appointed her son James Winter to represent
her, and also Agness, Elizabeth and Ann Lindsay, daus of Jean
Lindsay, dec'd.
The succession of James McCants, Jr. is found in the 1816
records of West Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, and gives proof of
various relationships..
d.s.p.
"Never married. He died at the home of his nephew, Marion
McCants, in Louisiana." Ref: Miss Marian McCants, Washington
DC. (She kept a journal on the McCants family).
One of the daughters, Mary, Jean or Sarah is called Agness in
legal papers in the succession of James McCants in E. Feliciana
Parish, LA. He died d.s.p. Dec 21 1815. Proceeds of the sale
were divided among five roots of his to wit: Jane Lindsay,
Alexander McCants, Thomas McCants, Mary Hunt and Nathaniel
McCants. In SC, Mary Hunt appointed her son James Winter to
represent her by instrument, Sep 4, 1816, wit: Robert MARTIN and
James Keating.
James Winter of LA was chosen to represent AGNESS, ELIZABETH and
ANN LINDSAY, daughters of Jean Lindsay, dec'd. according to
instrument signed Nov 12 1819 by Robert MARTIN and Elizabeth
Lindsay, executors of estate of Jean Lindsay. She had 7
children and they specified they should receive 3/7th of Jean
Lindsay's share (Notarial Book B, St. Francisville, West
Feliciana Parish, LA)
In Williamsburg Dist. of SC ABNER BROWN, John McLaulin and Agnes
Barrett chose William F. Scott of Feliciana Parish, LA to
represent them. They each received $33.091/2 signifying each
was a child or represented a child of Thomas McCants.
John McCants of the AL Terr. chose Thomas Gordon to represent
him by instrument dated Nov 14, 1818 and witnessed by Ia. B.
McConnell. He received one share of $33.09.
The sucession of James McCants is found in the 1816 records and
is valuable because it gives proof of various relationships;
some of the receipts showing payment to some of the heirs have
been lost.

"[Cooper10.FTW] [Cooper13.FTW] Our ancestor, Alexander McNitt,
who was born in Laggan in 1656, came to Boston with his youngest
son, Barnard, in 1720. With their wives, they settled with an
Ulster Scottish colony near Worcester, Mass., and then moved
west to Palmer, Mass. in 1732. The eldest son of Alexander
McNitt, and brother of Barnard, named Alexander McNutt,
emigrated from Laggan to Maryland in 1735, with his family, and
then moved on to the Valley of Virginia in 1744. Another
Alexander McNitt emigrated from Laggan in 1722 and settled with
his family in central Pennsylvania.
These and many more emigrants from Ulster sailed across the
Atlantic in small ships, generally two masted square rigged
brigantines, which plied between Londonderry or Belfast and
American ports, and were forced to locate west of the
established settlements at Boston, Philadelphia, and Tidewater
Virginia, so that they were closer to the Indian frontiers. Most
of the Ulster Scottsmen received small grants, or purchased land
for their homes and farms. Most groups included a Presbyterian
minister.
The following is quoted from the Colonial Families of America,
Vol. 5, p. 379:
The second ALEXANDER MACNUTT, b. in Ireland, first settled near
Hagerstown, Maryland, shortly afterward removing to Augusta
County, Virginia, where he lived on land known as the MACNUTT
grants, near Lexington. He d. there about 1751, leaving several
sons, Alexander, John, William, Robert, James and another, said
to have been killed when a lad
in an Indian skirmish. There was also a daughter named Jane, who
later m. ---- [Benjamin] WEIR, of Nova Scotia."
