Jane Hornsby Magee Coney was first married to Jesse Magee.
Jesse's parents were: Jacob Magee and Chaney. I found them in
the 1870 Pike Co, MS census. Jacob is 38 and Chaney is 30. Their
children are Martha who is 13, Jesse 14, Sam 11, Abram 7, Eliza
4, Henry 2 and Allen 8 months."
"I've been able to trace our history back to my
great-grandfather John C Coney who was probably bi-racial. He is
most probably a product of miscegenation . He is connected to
George Coney in the 1870 census. Definite proof from John's
death certificate shows that Patsy (Pattie) was John's natural
mother. She was a housekeeper (slave) in a white Coney's home in
that area.. Not many records exists but I know that George and
Patsy were slaves. John who is listed as their son, is 21 years
old, along with Silas who is listed as 19 born May 1850, sisters
Clara (Chloe) and Ginny, brothers Jesse and Leander born about
1877.
When the Civil War ended in 1865 John was about 17 years old.
Who WAS his father? John Coney was described as a light skinned
African-American man by his grandchildren. He was remembered
riding a white horse overseeing the fields. I was also told that
John C. Coney as a young man was the buggy driver for his
"White" father. John Coney married Barbara Dillon. They had
several children:
Jacob, Elizabeth, Delia, William, Early, James, Lennie, John
Coney, Jr. Myrtis Matthews, and my grandfather Ulysses Coney,
Sr.
I invite any information that YOU would like to share with me
regarding my roots. I welcome any information from and about the
Coney's in the Pike County, MS area.
Researching these surnames: Coney, Conerly, Hughes, Dillon,
Webber,Burris, Simmons, Marshall, Magee, McGhee, Tate and more."

They were both living in Northampton Co., Va. at the time.
Thomas Sprigg was born in 1630 in Kettering, Northamptonshire,
England, and died in 1704 at Resurrection Manor, Calvert, Prince
George's Co., Md. His will was probated 29 Dec 1704. After
Katherine died, he married Eleanor Nuthall in 1668.
Shortly after Katherine's marriage to Thomas Sprigg, they moved
to the new colony of Maryland, where her brother-in-law, William
Stone, had gone as governor. Thomas Sprigg's land certificate in
Maryland shows that he transported himself, his wife Katherine,
Verlinda Roper, Nathaniel Sprigg, and several others. Verlinda
Roper was Thomas's young stepdaughter; Nathaniel may have been
an infant son -- no other record of him has been found. Sarah
Sprigg is listed by some writers as a daughter of Katherine
Sprigg and by some as a daughter of Thomas Sprigg' s second
wife.
Thomas Sprigg, Jr. is shown as the son of Katherine Sprigg in
Adventurers of Purse and Person, pp.190, 192. His birthdate is
uncertain, but was probably about 1665. One possibility is that
his mother died at or soon after his birth, and he was brought
up by his stepmother, Eleanor Nuthall Sprigg.
In 1670, Thomas Sprigg executed a deed of gift which identified
Sarah as his oldest daughter. Sarah was already married and
even had a married daughter, Sarah Pearce Beall, who was also
mentioned in the deed. When we consider ages and dates, it
seems likely that Sarah was from her father's marriage to
Katherine Graves Roper. (See Md. Hist. Mag., VIII:75.)
In Maryland, Katherine and her family settled first in Kent Co.,
and then across the bay in Calvert Co.
Children:
Nathaniel Sprigg, b.c. Dec. 1650 (by Jan. 1658) (Northampton
Co., Va.), died young.

Maryland Archives - INTRODUCTION
. . . . One's sympathy is generally with those who harbored, or
"entertained", a runaway servant, as this was usually done from
kindness of heart and and the knowledge that runaways generally
came from the homes of harsh masters. When Edmund Lindsey sued
Thomas Sprigg, one of the justices of Calvert County, for
unlawfully harboring, or "entertaining", the former's servant,
Robert Leeds, both parties to the suit agreed to refer the
matter to Mr. Thomas Notley and Dr. John Peerce for arbitration,
with the understanding that if they found against Sprigg he
would pass his note for 5000 pounds of tobacco to Lindsey (p.
374). The decision of the arbitrators is not reported.
