Philip took a very active part in the affairs of early
Henderson. He served on juries, many committees, and at the
January term of County Court, 1813, the Commissioners appointed
to build a new Court House, contracted with him to build the
said Court House at and for the sum of five thousand, one
hundred and forty-three dollars and to deliver the keys to the
commission as per plans and specifications.
Philip was greatly interested in the manufacture of salt at the
United States Saline Territory in Illinois. In 1818 he was
making a trip on horseback through Indiana to inspect some of
these salt works in which he was interested. He had hopes that
this trip would benefit his health, which was far from good.
Overcome by acute illness at Corydon, Indiana, he was cared for
by the Masons of that town until he died October 17, 1818. As
there was no quick way of transporting a body that distance in
this undeveloped territory, he was buried in Corydon, Indiana,
by his Masonic friends. It was several weeks before the news of
his death reached his family at Henderson. Later a marker was
erected over his grave.

Mother: JOAN de CORNWALL |
"Ingulf and Mathew Paris concur in stating that Howard, or
Hereward, was living in the reign of King Edward, 957 to 973,
and that he was a kinsman of Duke Oslac, and that his son,
Leofric, was the father of Hereward, who was banished by the
Conquerer. The very ancient book of the Church of Ely, 'Historia
Ecclesia Eliensis,' entirely confirms this statement. It appears
that Hereward was subsequently allowed to return and it is
certain that his family returned to Wigenhall and other portions
of their inheritance in Norfolk. Hereward's grandson, Hereward
or Howard and his wife Wilburga, in the reign of Henry II.,
granted a carucate of land in Torrington, in Norfolk, to the
Church of Len (Lynn) and directed that prayers should
be said for the souls of Hereward, his father, and of Hereward,
the Banished, or the Exile, his grandfather. Robert Hereward,
the son of Hereward, was seized of Wigenhall, Torrington and
other estates in Norfolk and was the father of John Hereward or
Howard, of Wigenhall, who by Lucy Germund, his wife, was the
father of Sir William Howard, Chief Justice of the Common Pleas,
from 1297 to 1308.
