"26 July 1776, MARYLAND COUNCIL OF SAFETY TO MARYLAND DELEGATES
IN THE CONTINENTAL CONGRESS [extract] No.78 Dunsmore's fleet has
separated; the Fowley and the Otter with a number of vessles
having Tory families on board remain in the mouth of St, Marys
River; the Roebuck and six or seven other vessells have moved up
the river Potowmack, as high as QUANTICO in Virginia, where they
stopt to take in water.- there are some flying reports of their
having landed at Mr. William Brent's and burnt his houses, which
are confirmed this day by Charles Lansdale- he said tis feared
they are landing on Collo. [William] Smallwood's estate- that
the last he heard of them was yesterday and the report was they
were landing on the Maryland side near Collo. Smallwood's

In a letter dated 8 Aug 1776 from John Parke CUSTIS to his
step-father, George WASHINGTON, he wrote of the British burning
of Richland, the Brent Estate at Aquia Creek, Overwharton
Parish: "You have no doubt heard of the Men of War coming up
Potowmack as far as Mr. BRENT'S whose House they burnt with
several outhouses and some Stacks of Wheat* HAMMOND sent 150 Men
who landed about 10 oclock under cover of a Gondola Tender, the
Militia were asleep after their drinking Frolick and did not
discover the Enemy untill they landed and their vessels began to
Fire* A Young Man by Name COMBS stayd untill he kild three of
the Enemy*" (They Called Stafford Home: The Development of

charge Mr. Walter GILES CHILES) later deceased, one of the
tenants of the aforesaid land (near Powhatan Swamp, James
Citty), hath, in his tyme, been at in building and other
improvements thereon, do by order of Council of State dated xxv
Nov 1671, grant to Susanna GILES (CHILES) the relict and
executrix of sd. Walter GILES (CHILES) 200 acres in James City
to the said Susanna for the term of 99 years." On 7 August 1672
Edward TRAVIS purchased 70 acres in James City from Susannah
CHILES.
20 Oct 1670: Black Point, James City Island, James City Co.
Virginia, USA (50, 96). Documentation that Walter Chiles (II)
was the son of Walter Chiles (I) can be found in the transfer of
the land "Black Poynt", on May 20, 1670, granted Walter Chiles,
father by right of descent to Walter Chiles, son & heir."
