Elected to C.S.A. Congress, he was Beauregard's A.D.C. at Ft
Sumter and 1st Bull Run (Manases) and then served on the
executive council of South Carolina. Appointed Davis's A.D.C.
and Col. he held this position under the friend of his Senate
days until appointed B.G. C.S.A. 23 Apr 1864. He was given
command of the reserve forces in South Carolina.
After the War he was active in overthrowing the Reconstruction
politicians. His wife wrote the delightful "Diary from Dixie".
