Hawkins Family Cemetery, Oakley Farm, La Plata Maryland. The
Hawkins family cemetery is located on what was once known as
Oakley farm (Now Hawkin's Purchase subdivision), at the end of
Hawkins Gate Road just outside of La Plata Maryland. The
cemetery is maintained, whenever possible, by the Bowling family
of La Plata and is privately owned by the decendants of the
Hawkins family. Vandals damaged and stole some stones in the
late 1970's
The following records include the inscriptions on the stolen
stones recorded by myself prior to the vandalism.
The history of this family in Maryland is well- preserved in the
archives. It can be traced to Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri,
Alabama, Florida and California.
The immigrant Henry Hawkins, father of Henry Holland Hawkins, is
not believed to be buried here. It is likely he is buried at a
farm known as Johnsontown part of which which still survives in
Charles County Maryland.

of the headstone is identical to the style of the missing stone
of Col. Samuel Hawkins' grave)

Age 65 yrs.
(The large obilisk portion of this stone was vandalized. The
broken pieces were used to mark the location of Col. Samuel

a small stone bowl that was also stolen)

Photographs, taken ca. 1900 and in the possession of the Bowling
family, indicate that two additional markers may be missing.
These additional graves appear to be marked by rose bushes and
possibly ferns now growing where the photos show what appear to
be wooden posts topped with stone urns. It is not certain,
however, that they were grave markers.
