The monster of pandemics was the flu of 1918.
More than 550,000 Americans, and at least 20 million worldwide
died. What made the 1918 flu so devastating was that it also
struck those in the 20-40 age group. Armies of men forced to
live in close, unsanitary quarters were moving from place to
place, and there were no antibiotics to battle pneumonia.
Jan 17, 1996 -Despite all the incredible breakthroughs:
virologist Edwin Kilbourne of New York Medical College says "I
don't think we could do a damn thing about it if the 1918 virus
came back."
I feel sure this was a devastating blow to the family since
their father had died in 1912, and George was the oldest, head
of family. The family showed great courage through all the
unexpected deaths that were to come in the 1940's.
