Chapman Alexander WHITELY

28 Mar 1830 - 17 Jan 1888

ID Number: I49640

  • RESIDENCE: Smythe Co. VA and KY and Hendricks Co. IN
  • BIRTH: 28 Mar 1830, Saltville, Smith Co., VA
  • DEATH: 17 Jan 1888, Danville, Hendricks Co. IN
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1775]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) WHITELY WHITELEY

Family 1 : Lydia Margaret BROUGHTON

Notes

It sure seems like there might be a connection here...the names are all so alike! (I DID tell you, didn't I, that my Chapman Whitely's middle name was Alexander??). The, of course, he had a son named Francis and grandfather named Robert and gr-grandfather named Robert. I've got the wives' names, though, (sitting in dusty courthouses in Smythe and Washington Co., VA) and there's no match there...but, gosh, as I said, Chapman went to KY to enlist in the military. I also know that he was married before he married Lydia Broughton in KY to someone named Sara and he had two children, William Samuel and Cora Ann.

Your web page is great! I love the pictures and looked at all of them! Attached is a picture of Chapman and his father, Samuel. Keep in touch!! I love these Whitely's and whenever I'm doing research I always seem to wind up looking for them wherever I go!! Diane

I am attaching my descendant tree of Robert Whitely, d. abt 1804 in Washington Co., VA (which then became Smythe Co.). The name Francis does appear throughout my family but the direct line never got out of VA, until my ancestor turns up in KY and joins the Union Army (in Rockcastle Co). I BELIEVE some of those Whitely's in KY were kin to my Whitely's and I have always thought maybe my Chapman went to his relative's in KY when he went there. None of the rest of the family went and, as far as I can tell, Chapman never went back but, instead, went to Indiana after the war.
