"Benjamin Franklin Brian, according to Frank White, "... was a great man ... crusading preacher, organized and pastored several churches, Senator for 8 years, taught first school in Pollock, LA in 1892, was an amateur lawyer and doctor, wise counselor, blacksmith, Confederate veteran. He and his spouse were the first couple to be married, 18 NOV 1852, in Winn Parish when it was carved from Natchitoches Parish."

Quote from Linda B Shull, "... was born November 28th, 1833 in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, the son of Francis and Hannah Rogillio Brian. After his mother's death when he was only 13 years old, his father remarried to the widow, Salome Causey Thompson, and they moved in February of 1847 to Caldwell Parish, Louisiana."

"Both he and his wife joined the Baptist Church early in life and he was soon ordained a Baptist minister which he followed until his death, being very active in Baptist life in his Parish."Excerpted from "Three early families of East Feliciana Parish became settlers of Caldwell Parish: Rogillio, Brian, Reitzell Families" by Tommie Sue Larche Watters Reitzell.

Benjamin Franklin Brian married Roseanna Roe who was born in 1836 at Big Creek Community which at that time was in Rapides Parish but is now a part of Grant Parish.

Benjamin Franklin Brian served in the Civil War for three years as a courier under General Blanchard--3rd Regiment, Louisiana Cavalry, Company C. He was a Baptist minister in the Central Louisiana area and was moderator and clerk for Big Creek Baptist Association. He was also listed as one of the early educators in Grant Parish and was State Senator for eight years . In 1852 he and his wife were living on Big Creek just outside the northern boundary of what is now Pollock, LA. Benjamin Franklin Brian died in 1896 and was buried at Friendship Baptist Church in Fishville. His widow, Roseanna Roe, died 5 June 1936 and was buried at Mars Hill Cemetery near Verda, LA.

Zeagler, Member, General Philemon Thomas Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; presented this genealogy to Louisiana Society Daughters of the American Revolution, N.S.D.A.R, Mrs. Joseph A. Tobin, Jr., Regent, L.S.D.A.R. Bound July, 1967, Genealogical Records Committee, Mrs. Frank H. Walker, Chairman, pages 24-37, 90-98.

Pages handwritten by Hardy Lee Brian, son of Benjamin Franklin Brian and Roseanna Roe.

"Francis Brian was a younger brother of S. M. Brian, of the same Godly parents, born in 1860 in East Feliciana, where he married Hannah Rogillio, whose father was a Castilian Spaniard and mother the daughter of a Dutch farmer. From this union there were 8 children: Hardy, Benjamin Franklin, James, Mary, Matilda, Martha, Lydia, Elizabeth. All of these raising families . His wife, Hannah died in 1846 and he married the widow Thompson whose maiden name was Salome Causey, by whom was raised Iley Marion, Solomon Morgan, Theodosia Adaline, Francis Nathaniel, who also raised families. Francis Brian and family moved from East Feliciana to Caldwel l Parish in February of 1847, where he died on 27th of February 1860 of Paralysis.

He was a devout leader of the Baptist Church and in same. He was also noted for his fatherly advice and leadership in the communities where he lived. His son, Benjamin Franklin, was my father, born in E. Feliciana Parish 29th day of Nov., 1833.

He moved to Caldwell Parish with his father in 1847, and on Nov. 18, 1852 he married Rosann a Roe of Winn, his marriage license being the first issued at Winnfield after organization of Parish. My mother, Rosanna Roe was born on Big Creek Grant (now) then Rapides Parish in Sept.. 26, 1836 and her father was Samuel Roe and mother Rosanna Stevens also born in La. My father's children were: Louisiana, Hannah, Matilda, Laura Alice, Isabella, Lydia, Hester (died a s infant), Hardy Lee, Harvey Iley, Francis Nathaniel, Mary Rogillio, Zenobia Emiline. He was a blacksmith, running two forges when war broke out in 1861. He was rejected a volunteer in the infantry he joined the cavalry and served the Confederacy 4 years, and 20 days, as cavalryman, courier and scout, coming home after Lee's surrender to find his $4000 in slaves freed, his trade all gone and a wife and six children to support. He recommenced his Blacksmithing on Fish Creek in Grant Parish (then Rapides) where the writer was born 7/11/1865, and continued it till the railroads came with modern machinery.

He joined the Baptist church in his early married life and was ordained a regular minister, both of which he followed until his death. He died in Oct., 1896 of kidney troubles on Big Creek where he had lived for 28 years. He died in the full triumph of a living faith regretting only that pecuniary circumstances had compelled him to almost abandon the ministry in the last few years of his life. He was beloved by all his neighbors and for miles around they came to see him in his last illness. For many years in eastern Grant he has been a kind of patriarch to the people--their doctor, their lawyer, their blacksmith, and their preacher--a father to the widow and orphan, and a patient arbiter of all their differences and no amount of politics or ney ideas on religion could or ever did wean them away from him. A modest marble shaft, in the Friendship Church graveyard marks his dust but his life is still bright in the minds and hearts of his neighbors and descendants, and his score and more of grandsons now reaching manhood can find no greater compliment to each other than "you show the blood of your old grandfather."

Notes

My name is Kathryn Parks and I am a descendant of Joseph Whiteley (Whitley) who moved into the Cumberland Gap in Washington County, VA by 1785. Joseph Whiteley, Samuel Van Hook, Sr., Samuel Van Hook, Jr. and others signed a petition dated 10 December, 1785, addressed to Washington County, Virginia to protest the proposal to enact a law thereby establishing provisions (and rulings) for teachers of Christian religion. Would anyone know where I could send for a copy of this petition?

The following is an excerpt from that petition: "....your proposal to enact a LAW thereby establishing provisions for teachers in Christian religion....We think this to be highly improper and inconsistent with the rights of Citizens.
Religion is a personal privilege hence we suppose an attempt rational when Legislative Capacity seems to afford it protection...To control us in that most valuable birthright would be robbing us indeed of the Highest blessing Heaven afford us..Leave their maintenance to the Liberality of the people at large!"
Thank you for any help you might give me. Joseph's land later became part of Russell Co., then Scott Co. Kathryn Parks
