Lacy, Drury, 1802-1884.
Papers, 1823-1903.
1,662 items (3.5 linear feet).
Drury Lacy of Prince Edward County, Va., studied at the Union
Theological Seminary in Virginia; was minister at Presbyterian
churches in New Bern, N.C., 1834-1837, and Raleigh, 1837-1855;
president of Davidson College, 1855-1860; lived n Warrenton,
N.C., 1861-1862; and served as chaplain at Confederate military
hospitals at Raleigh and Wilson, N.C., 1862-1865.
During 1866-1878, he taught at Peace Institute, where his wife
was Lady Principal.
He married first Williana Wilkinson (1806-1846), and second, in
1849, Mary Ritchie Rice, both of Virginia. Also represented in
the collection is Lacy's oldest daughter, Bessie (1832-1900).
In 1853 she married Thomas Webber Dewey (1827-1875) and moved to
Charlotte, N.C., where he was a banker.
Primarily letters written by members of the Lacy and Dewey
families and their relatives and close friends in North Carolina
and in Prince Edward County, Va. The letters were addressed
chiefly to Williana W. Lacy until her death in 1846, and to her
daughter, Bessie, from 1845 to about 1886, but also to other
members of these two households. In addition to the health and
welfare of members of the family and their personal activities,
the correspondence frequently mentions Presbyterian Church
affairs, including personnel, issues, assemblies, etc.; the
education of the younger members of the family, including
letters of advice to them from their parents; social life and
news; and comments on national issues and local events.
Of particular note are letters, 1823, from Drury Lacy at
Laurelbrook near Petersburg, Va., describing his social life and
teaching;
letters, 1836-ca. 1840, from Moses Drury Hoge at the Union
Theological Seminary in Richmond describing student life and
Presbyterian matters;
correspondence of Bessie Lacy at Edgeworth Seminary in
Greensboro, N.C., 1845-1848, and her school friends, 1848-1850s;
and letters, 1854-1861, from
the Lacy family at Davidson, N.C.
Most of the Civil War materials are letters to the Deweys in
Charlotte, N.C., from family and friends in Raleigh and Wilson,
N.C., and Richmond, Va., describing local conditions; and from
Bessie's brothers and father in the Confederate Army. Also
included are some recruitment papers of Co. B, 1st North
Carolina Artillery Regiment.
Volumes include commonplace books, albums, and notes on Bessie's
activities in connection with the Presbyterian Church and
various social clubs in Charlotte.
Gifts, 1963-1964.
