"Charles Lavender, Sr. received a Land Patent of 200 acres on the Tye River in Albemarle Co., VA on 12 January 1746.

There is an Amherst Co., VA Court Order Book reference for a Court held in November, 1785 of a Motion being brought by William Lavender, heir of William Lavender, deceased [son of this Charles] which mentions this patented land on the Tye River and appoints William Meredith, William Spencer, Stephen Watts and Joseph Dillard to divide this land between Mildred Mills [William's widow], Elizabeth __?__ [William's mother] and the children of William Lavender, deceased.

There is a long established rumor that Sarah Lavender, the daughter I have attributed to this Charles, was instead the daughter of William Lavender [son of this Charles] and his wife, Mildred Mills. William Mills, father of Mildred Mills, wrote his Will on 26 Sept. 1755 and it was admitted for probate in Amherst Co., VA on 4 Aug 1766. It mentions his wife, Mary, sons Ambrose, William and Jesse, and daughters Sarah Watts, Elizabeth Learwoods, Anna Mills and Milley Mills. This Will, by not mentioning a married name for Mildred, proves to my satisfaction that Milley [Mildred] had not married on 26 Sept. 1755 when this will was written. This dispells the belief which existed when I began genealogy in 1977 that my Sarah Lavender who married James Edmunds was the daughter of William Lavender and Mildred Mills. Mildred could not have been married until 1755 at the earliest (after the Will was written). James Edmunds' and Sarah Lavender's eldest child was Mary, born 11/2/1761. If Mildred Mills was Sarah Lavender's mother, Sarah could have been no older than age 6 when Mary Lavender was born on 11/2/1761. This is impossible. This means that Sarah Lavender was probably a sister to William Lavender."
