Mother: UNNAMED |
TN Collinsworths by Mrs. Katherine W. Ewing, Nashville, TN:
reports that James Collinsworth, is a presumed brother of
William & John and 1/2 brother of Edmund, of the Edmund
Collinsworth b1760)/Cockrill/Shute/Thompson lines.
In 1784 he was in Nashville when he was a chain carrier for
surveyor John Buchanan.
In 1794 he m. Jennie Brown.
In 1795 he sold land and adm'n the est. of Wm. Collinsworth;
deeds, and there was James Collinsworth in 1798.
In 1798 he was lieutenant, 1st Reg; and
In 1800 he sold his land. Mrs. Ewing says this was the last
evidence of his presence in Davidson Co. TN.
James sold his land in TN and in 1804 purchased 1600 acres in
Wilkinson Co. MS with George and William Brown, on the
headwaters of Bayou Sara.
Wilkinson Co. MS 1820 census: 3m/u10; 1m/10-16; 1m/16-18;
1m/over 45. 1f/u10; 2f/16-18; 1f/26-45; 1f/over 45. Poss. 5
sons & 4 daus.
"Certificate of Character" James Collinsworth, Woodville, Oct
13, 1821, to Stephen F. Austin, Esq. TX. signed by Govr. of MS,
Geo. Poindexter, James Carraway, Ch. Jus. of Wilkinson Co.,
Moses Liddell, Jus of Co. Ct, Isaac Dillahunty, Clk of Wilkinson
Co. MS and Wm T. Lewis.
"We the undersigned citizens of Wilkinson Co, state of MS, have
for a number of years been intimately acquainted with the Bearer
hereof Mr. James Collinsworth -- and from our long acquaintance
with him can say with propriety that his conduct has ever been
that of an honest industrious and correct man in all his
transactions, and we feel no hesitation in recommending him as
such, and as a man in whom confidence can be placed in his
intercourse with the world."
This is mysterious because James name is not listed among
Austin's colonists, and is probably not the James Collinsworth
the Chief Justice of TX as records indicate he did not leave TN
until 1835. Possible it refers to James B. this James's son.
Another James Collinsworth, thought to be their uncle moved to
MS from TN in 1800 and may have moved to TX sometime after 1821
with several sons, David, Lt in the TX Army at Fort Goliad and
who was shot and scalped by Indians Oct 30, 1835.
In The Austin Papers, Vol. 2, Part 1: a Cert. of Character for
a James Collinsworth to Stephen F. Austin, Esq. written by
Poindexter, Govr of MS and others from Woodville MS is recorded;
James is named as the father of Elizabeth Collinsworth in the
marriage records of St. Helena Parish, LA. when she m. David T.
W. Cook, Jan 13, 1812. Their son was James Collinsworth Cook,
d. 1863 Claiborne Parish, LA. A dau was probably Loretta who m.
Abel Waddill in 1819. In the 1850 E. Baton Rouge census Abel, a
school master 51, and Loretta, age 50, and their son Hugh
Waddill, a druggist, living in his household was Mary
Collinsworth, b. TN, possible dau of James and Jennie. It is
believed another dau was Narcissa, who m. Zachariah Waddill in
Wilkinson Co. MS June 7, 1821.
James sons may have been John, William, Edmund, David, George
Morse, and James B. Edmond Collinsworth m. Mary May on May 12,
1824, St. Helena Parish, LA. And on 1840 census age 30-40 with
wife and three children.
David, George Morse and James B. are all later found in TX.
William may have gone to Travis Co. TX; the 1850 census lists a
William C. Collinsworth, age 43, b in MS, wife Mary C. age 42,
sons Andrew, James, Willis and dau Mary and Loucinda. This may
be the Mr. Collinsworth referred to as a wagonmaker in old
Comanche in Travis Co. about 1840 in Recollections of Early
Texas by J. H. Jenkins.
