Mother: Mary BALL |
In 1831, Robert Edward Lee married Mary Anna Randolph Custis,
daughter of Mary Lee Randolph Fitzhugh and her husband, George
Washington Parke Custis. Mr. Custis was the grandson of Martha
Dandridge Custis Washington. Martha Dandridge was married first
to Daniel Parke Custis (1711-1757), and had two children. After
Daniel Custis died, she married George Washington. Martha's
son, John Parke Custis (1755-1781), married Eleanor Calvert and
had three children. John Parke Custis died of disease while at
Yorktown with George Washington. Eleanor Calvert Custis returned
to her family with Martha Parke Custis, the eldest child.
George and Martha Washington took the two younger children,
Eleanor Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, to Mount
Vernon. George Washington legally adopted these two of Martha's
three grandchildren. George Washington is not known to have been
the natural father of any children.
1759/01/06
Martha married George Washington. The marriage changed George
from an ordinary planter to a substantially wealthy landowner.
He had resigned his commission in the militia and so, George,
Martha, Jacky (4), and Patsy (2) moved into the enlarged and
remodeled Mt. Vernon. (Historic Valley Forge, Who served her?

Wickliffe, Ann d. 1704, the grand-aunt of George Washington.
"George Washington had his boyhood's home in Fredericksburg, and
after his public career ended he used to go there to visit his
venerable mother. His arrival was the occasion of great
conviviality and rejoicing. Dinner parties and card parties
were then in order, and we
find, in that wonderful record of his daily receipts and
expenditures, that on one of these occasions he won thirty
guineas at loo. Probably it was after this night that he threw
the historic dollar across the river, the only instance of
extravagance ever charged against him. A
dinner party was usually given to him on his arrival at the old
Indian Queen Tavern, where, tradition tells us, drink was deep
and play was high. It is generally believed that Washington did
not laugh or enjoy a joke. I have often heard Judge Francis
Taliaferro Brooke, for many years Chief Justice of Virginia, say
this was not true. Washington often dined at the Indian Queen
Tavern, at which he was present. A British officer sang a
comical song, -- a very improper song, but funny as it was
improper, --- at which Washington laughed till the tears ran
down his cheeks, and called upon the singer to repeat it."
