Notes

We are still searching for our BASS ancestors who were pioneers of the Northwest Territory in Vincennes, Knox Co. IN and fitting together the pieces of this puzzle.
This group of BASSes were the first BASSes to arrive in Indiana.

The 1807 Territorial census of Knox Co. indicates there were three BASS Heads of Household:
Mathew
Drueah [Drury]
Etheldred T.

To this list of early BASS settlers, we can add James, William, Delilah, and Sally BASS who were known to be in Vincennes all by 1811/15.

Mathew and Drury rapidly disappear from the records in Indiana with no wills or probate records identified in Vincennes. Where did they go? Examination of census records reveal a Matthew BASS in Bullitt Co KY 1810. I believe this to be the Mathew of Knox on the 1807 NW Terr. Census. Now we are wondering if that is the homeplace of our BASS family or is it a new settlement for them. KY was formed from Virginia in 1792. Our BASS family settled in Indiana probably between 1797 and 1807. William T. BASS's dau married a COLEMAN whose family was from Bourbon Co. KY. Additionally Thixton, a frequent witness on wills etc., was in census records of Jefferson and Bullitt Co., KY 1787/1800 [Bullitt was formed from Jefferson in 1796].

Indenture 23 Oct 1813 in Bullitt Co. KY
Absalom BASS bargained and sold unto Cornelius BASS of this County & State Towit [horse, plough, corn and household items] for the consideration of Twenty dollars current money to me.

Pullin and wife Aggy, g. dau; Sally McClanahan, Polly McClanahan aforesaid, my daus., and widow of Wm., decd; son Thomas, my Military survey; son-in-law, David Hickman and wife, Clary; Robt. Johnstone and wife, Peggy; g. sons, Wm. Johnston and Maurice Langhorne; to Samuel Elgin and wife Aggy; to Thos. Ashford and wife, Sally and Isaiah Elkins and wife Ann, land in Woodford Co. Extr: son, Thomas. Written May 4, 1807. Probated Feb 1809. Wts.: Elizemon Basey, Wm. Love, Alfred Bayse. Codicil: two sons of son, Wm., decd, viz: Thos and Wm trustees named for Agatha Pullin; g. dau., Peggy Dudley, wife of Robt. W. Dudley; six daus., of Elizabeth McClanahan, widow of William, two of whom the above Agatha Pullin and Peggy Dudley. Feb 1809.

Apparently Thos also had land in Woodford Co., KY - and our James BASS had a black horse in Woodford Co KY listed in his estate papers Knox Co. IN in 1815. [I think the James BASS that m. Delilah PATTERSON Bullitt Co., KY 1810 is the same James BASS who died in Knox Co., IN 1815.].

The will is witnessed by Elizemon BASEY and Alfred BAYSE. These two I believe are probably BASS as later census spellings of the Elizemon are BAYSE - a variant spelling of the name. Also, Alfred is a common given name in our family. Elizemon BASYE m. Nancy McCLANAHAN Culpeper Co. VA, she the dau of William McCLANAHAN, a Baptist Preacher, b. abt. 1730 Westmoreland Co. VA d. Greenville Co., SC his will dated 15 May 1802.

Our BASS came to Indiana sometime between 1797 and 1806 from Bullitt Co., KY. We do not know where our BASS ancestors came from prior to KY. Interestingly, later arrivals of BASSes to Indiana (primarily from NC) did not include Knox, Pike or Gibson Counties. This makes you wonder if their ancestry lies elsewhere. Etheldred's wife Catharine was b Tennesee or NC. Etheldred's next door neighbor Jacob Tevebaugh was from Hampshire VA arriving in Vincennes as early as 1796 and his brother was in Kentucky. James BASS estate settlement of 1815 mentions his black horse fetched from Woodford KY.

Another possibility is that our BASS Family is from North Carolina where there are about 78 Bass families in many counties as early as 1810. Many BASS families of NC stem from John BASS of Norfolk VA who married Love HARRIS in 1696 Perquimans Co., NC and died in Bertie Co., NC 1732. Given names of his descendants include Samuel, Benjamin, James, Moses, and William. Wayne County seems to have the largest concentration. The 1810 Census for NC give us some good candidates for father of our James where we find James and William in Northhampton and Samuel and Simon in Halifax. Note that a William appears in Knox Co., IN in 1820 and a Simon appears in IN and LA in later census records. There is a Benjamin Sr. and Ben Jr. in Granville Co., NC where also resides John WEBB family as early as 1785. Another Interesting findinging is HOWELL prominent in Granville Co., NC - and there is a Howell BASS in Gibson Co., IN 1820. There are only 5 Bass families in Indiana in 1820 Howel Bass in Gibson Co., Chatharine and William in Knox, and Arthur and Reuben in Washington Co. Only Chatharine and Howel have a son under age 10.

Did this Reuben remove to Washington Co., IN by 1820 ?
Reuben BASS 000000-00000-0400 WashingtonCo., IN p212 (see census records).

The Brunswick Co. VA BASSes also have similar names among our family included Matthew and Drury and the Quaker records show that BASS members of their church removed to IN in the early 1800's.
UNION Co. SC BASS, George H. Allen, Ph.D. -- census 1790 - and census 1800, Nathaniel or Nathan, Metheldred, Philamon, Isaac, Elizabeth Bass.

All Bass gone by 1810 - no wills listed.

At various times during history, Union County was considered to be part of the following counties: Anson County, NC (formed in 1749); Mecklenburg County,
NC (formed in 1763); Tryon County, NC (formed in 1769); Old Berkely County, SC (formed in 1683); Old Craven County, SC (formed in ???); St. Mark's Parish, SC (formed in 1757); and Ninety-Six (96) Judicial District, SC (formed in 1769).

Union County, South Carolina was established from the Ninety-Six (96) District in 1785. In 1791, the Pinckney Judicial District was established, comprising Union, Spartanburg, York, and Chester counties. In 1800, the judicial districts were abolished, and Union County was known as Union District from 1800 to 1868.

Among historical records, we find Capt. Nathaniel Basse who came to America in 1619 in the James River area, helped start a settlement at Lawne's Creek, and had a plantation called "Basse's Choice". Descendents of Nathaniel went south to the Black Creek area of North Carolina [see "The Bass Family of Black Creek North Carolina" compiled by James Albert Bass & James Albert Bass Jr.]

The following summary of the first generation of our family undoubtedly has errors and some have been placed here only to prevent them from being lost in our research materials. I feel sure that William T. and Mathew BASS are brothers of our Etheldred and am still searching for evidence to prove relationships of the remainder of this family.

Georgia Legions http://members.aol.com/mapurdy16/GALegion.htm.

"A legion is usually composed of artillery, cavalry, and infantry companies. It is in essence a small army. T.R.R. Cobb tried to carry the concept of a legion to its logical end. Originally Cobb's legion was composed of a cavalry battalion and an infantry battalion. In order to make Cobb's Legion a true legion he had the Troup Artillery attached to Cobb's Legion, but he learned a hard lesson. An army can only move as rapidly as its slowest unit. This meant that Cobb's Legion moved like an artillery unit. To rectify the situation he had the artillery transferred out of his legion. In Georgia the usual composition of a legion was a battalion of cavalry and a battalion of infantry."

"Across the mill race, defending the Sunken Road, was Major General Thomas R. Rootes Cobb of Georgia, grandson of Thomas Reade Rootes. Ironically, his brigade was firing in the direction of the mansion where his mother, Sarah Rootes Cobb, had grown up. He was mortally wounded in the afternoon of December 13, almost certainly by shrapnel from Union artillery firing from the town (see David L. Preston, "The Death of General Cobb," in Civil War Regiments, Vol. 4, No. 4, Campbell, Cal.: Regimental Studies, 1995)."

"Nov. 1862 Brigadier General 1 Army Corps in McLaw's Division
Cobbs Brigade ANV Confederate States Army
War Involvements: 1862 Col. of Cobb's Legion, Seven Days, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg Campaign
Shot and killed in "The Battle of Fredericksburg" (also known as "Federal Hill---his mother's old home) in Fredericksburg, VA. on Dec. 13, 1862.

General Thomas R. R. Cobb, Confederate Army (1823-1862)
After graduating from the University of Georgia he practiced law and wrote numerous books on the law, on slavery as an institution, as well as newspaper and magazine articles. He is said to have been one of the most potent forces in taking Georgia out of the Union. After serving in the C.S.A. Congress like his brother Howell, he was commissioned Colonel of Cobb's Legion 28 in August of 1861. He led these troops in the Seven Days' battles, at Second Manassas, and Antietam before being appointed Brig. Gen. on November 1, 1862. Cobb commanded his brigade under General Lafayette McLaws at Fredericksburg in December of 1862. He was killed during this battle while defending the wall on Marye's Heights. A sharpshooter's bullet struck him in the thigh, severing an artery. Stretcher-bearers rushed him to a small house nearby where a surgeon tried in vain to stop the bleeding, but within minutes, General Cobb was dead."

May 2004 Restoration of Thomas R. R. Cobb home in Athens, Georgia
T. R. R. Cobb Wins Over Intolerance
Commentary by J. A. Davis

Georgians and indeed Americans throughout the nation who know history and the history of jurisprudence rank T. R. R. Cobb of Athens, Georgia a giant in annals of Georgia and United States history.

His achievements are exemplified and practiced every day in any court in the nation that hears cases. You see, it was he who first codified the English Common Law into what we know today as the legal code practiced throughout the United States.

Mr. Cobb's work is the continual precedent for legal practices virtually everywhere that newer laws have not replaced it. Judges all the way to the Supreme Court cite his work as the precedent for existing law.

The University of Georgia's School of Law was founded by T. R. R. Cobb.

When the War Between the States broke out, Mr. Cobb joined the Confederate Army and rose thru the ranks to General. Among many roles, he was the architect of the Constitution of the Confederate States of America. He died defending the system he so dearly loved at the battle of Fredericksburg.

In recent years intolerance by some who have little value for American history has tried to diminish if not erase the contributions of this great American. The good news is General Cobb lives again.

Recent newspaper reports have played heavily on the restoration of the old original Cobb mansion in Athens. Truly one of the most outstanding in an area of beautiful Southern homes. Sometime back plans to restore the mansion at Stone Mountain were put in place, but never materialized. It's deteriorated remnants remained in decay for nineteen years.

Thanks to the efforts of the League of the South which is raising most of the three million dollars for the restoration, the largest part coming from the Watson-Brown Foundation, the work is underway.

The victory for General Cobb and the preservationists in Athens-Clarke County did not come easy. Southern history revisionists popped up all over the place, trying to stop the project. Three trustees on Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation resigned in protest. They were not and never have been affiliated in any way with the Georgia Heritage Coalition where the policy of restoring and preserving all Georgia history and heritage reigns supreme.
