He left children by his 1st wife.

"A fellow DUKE researcher passed on a deed from CHOWAN Co NC dated 1748. In this deed one FRANCIS DUKE is selling for "30 barrels of tar & two pounds ten shillings Curr't money of Virginia" "a plantation unto whereon now lives ADAM KNIGHT containing by estimation 100 acres more or less" to AMASA DUKE " & is part of a tract of eight hundred acres of land formerly granted unto HACKLEY deceased as by this Patent dated the 14th day of April 1702 and was sold & conveyed to CHRISTOPHER DUDLEY and by him sold to THOMAS DUKE as by Deed of sale now upon the publick records of Nansemond dated on the 12th of April 1705 which said plantation or parcel of Land is bounded as followeth"
Goes on to describe the above portion of land. then it is followed by:
Sealed & Deliver in
the Presence of us.

Wm Fryer Jurat his
Thomas Piland Jno. Duke
mark

Myself and my fellow DUKE researcher are trying through this deed to establish a pattern of land ownership of the DUKEs of Nansemond Co and therefore a family relationship. Note that the land was in Nansemond Va , filed in Chowan Co NC (bordering Nansemond Va - why would this be done ??) Also note that 'Jno Duke' was a witness (significance ?? )
Being that the Nansemond Co courthouse and records were burned three times and birth/death/tax/ records are somewhat scarce I/we have to use what is available and try to make connections anyway available. Can any of you offer any help in identifying ANY further the principles in this transaction or ANY of the names mentioned in this transaction ? I am especially interested of course in FRANCIS and AMASA . Was this deed dated 1748 issued in Chowan because of a fire in Nansemond ( I don't have the dates of the 3 burnings)? Was the land really in Nansemond as one is led to believe ? I have not related the description for the sake of brevity but unless someone was familiar with the area and knew which "pine tree was located near the "SCRATCH HALL branch" the description may make as much sense to all as it does to me. I will furnish it if needed. Any and All Help Appreciated Dick" [S828]
