In 1779, Col. Abraham Bowman with 30 families from the Shenandoah Valley, moved to Kentucky, settling in Fayette County in 1781. The route of travel from the Cedar Creek neighborhood to Kentucky in those days offered a choice. To go via the Valley of Virginia and Cumberland Gap, the distance of 450 - 500 miles was about the same as the route to Pittsburgh and down the Ohio by flatboat. Either way presented difficulties, but feed for the stock was easier to obtain on the overland and route than when making the journey by river.

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 9, Ed. 1, Tree #2985, Date of Import: 11 Jun 1997] Colonel in the Revolution and early pioneer to Kentucky. Owned 8,000 acres on Elkhorn Creek about four miles SW of Lexington and established Harrodsburgh. Was a surveyor and surveyed several towns along the Ohio River.
