Our earlier local historians first found the Robert Dowling
family in Virginia. Although some said that he was an Irish
immigrant, most of those closely associated with the family are
confidant that the Dowling family were of Scottish extraction.
Research into the family of Robert Dowling indicates that he had
two wives, the first of whom (name unknown) bore one
son....William Dowling, in Virginia. After the death of his
first wife, Robert next married Sarah Guinn, some of whose
family distinguished themselves in the Revolutionary War.

Robert Dowling joined the 12th Virginia Regiment in May, 1777.
He later
served with the 6th Regiment of the North Carolina Continental
Infantry and fought in the following battles: Musgrove Mills;
Guilford Courthouse; Battle of the Cowpens; Battle of King's
Mountain. Volume 16, page 1042 of North Carolina Records lists
his pay voucher No. 1563 for $186 for eight years of service."
