"He evidently was a miller, as he lived on land known as Rose's
Mill. Howell H. Rose was born ca 1762 in Granville Co., North
Carolina, the youngest child. His father died when he was only
four or five years old. According to Raleigh, N. C.,
Revolutionary War Army Accounts, Howell was a captain of militia
during the Revolutionary War, for which he received 252 pounds;
he would have been younger than 22 when he served. (State
Archives, Raleigh, NC , Revolutionary Army Accounts, Vol C,
p.84)
He and Mary Pulliam Willis, daughter of Benjamin Pulliam of
Mecklenburg County, Virginia, and widow of William Willis, same
county, were married in Granville County, North Carolina,
February 19, 1795. No other marriage record has been found for
him, though later Mormon records list an E. Bushyhead as his
wife in Alabama. He and Mary lived on land left her by her late
husband William Willis in Mecklenburg Co., VA , until her
children from her first marriage sued them for the land. Howell
is listed on the Mecklenburg Co. tax rolls from 1795 through
1812. In 1796 Howell served as one of the appraisers of an
estate.
In 1798 he bought a tract of land in Granville Co., NC, but did
not keep it long. Evidently he had trouble staying out of debt
because in 1803 he gave security for money he owed.
Howell gave a deed of trust on certain slaves to William and
Bennett Marshall to secure a bond. In 1810 the children of Mary
Pulliam Willis Rose by William Willis, now of age, sued Howell
and Mary for their father's land and won.
DEED: Robert Marshall, Jos. Clausel and Hume Field conveyed to
Howel Rose cons. 50 pounds 110 acres by survey on the waters of
Little Bluestone Creek bounded by the land of Phillip Lockett,
Benjamin R. Pulliam and the said Howel Rose, "it being the land
whereon the said Howel Rose now lives."
DEED: Howell Rose of Mecklenburg Co. conveyed to John Baptist
cons $577.50 - 110 acres of land by survey on the waters of
Little Bluestone Creek (see map), bounded by land of Phillip
Lockett and Benjamin Pulliam, "being the same land whereof Wm.
Willis died seized ... and where said Howel Rose now lives."
In the Mecklenburg Co VA Fiduciary Book 1765-1850, unpaged,
there is found a record that Benjamin R. Pulliam qualified as
administrator on the estate of Mary Rose, 20 Dec. 1830. The
estate was valued at $1500. Samuel Lockett and William Moody
were sureties for Benjamin R. Pulliam, administrator. Benjamin
was half brother to Mary Pulliam Willis Rose.
It was shortly after he sold all the land he lived on to settle
his wife's children's claim against him, that Howel must have
gone to Alabama.
In the Mormon genealogy Howell's wife is listed as E. Bushyhead,
who may have been a second wife. (There was a Chief Bushyhead of
the Cherokee Paint Clan whose daughter Catherine married John
Gunter.) E. Bushyhead's father is listed as C. Bushyhead.
However, I have no other documentation of this marriage. James
Rose, born in 1809, was the son of Mary Pulliam, but other
children may have been those of E. Bushyhead.
Howell's will is dated September, 1845, in Marshall Co., AL. All
of his heirs are named, but no wife is named, so it is assumed
that he died a widower.
He married Mary PULLIAM, daughter of Benjamin PULLIAM & Margaret
BRUCE, Circa 1780 in Granville Co., NC. Died Before 1845.
He second married E BUSHYHEAD. A Katherine Bushyhead, d.
11-8-1835 was the daughter of Ghe-Go-Ne-Li Bushyhead, Chief of
the Cherokee Paint Clan in Guntersville AL. She was married to
John Gunter of Gunter's Landing, late Guntersville. There was an
Elizabeth Bushyhead, no dates. I don't know how they are
related. Got this info from James Gunter, Newall, OK.
They had the following children: i. William ROSE ii. James ROSE
iii. David ROSE iv. Nancy ROSE v. Matilda ROSE vi. Ann ROSE 29
vii. Leony ROSE viii. Elizabeth ROSE
Sixth Generation: 23. William ROSE. May have been a minister or
justice of the peace because he married a couple in 1838. He
married Martha FORSYTHE, 21 Jul 1838 in Marshall Co. AL."
