Major Joseph Eggleston, Jr. From Amelia County, VA. was a highly meritorious officer of Lee's Legion in the Continental Army and served through the whole of the southern campaigns. He achieved the rank of Major and was Second-in-Command to Light Horse Harry Lee of Lee's Legion in the Virginia Continetal Line. He was a charter member of The Society of The Cincinatti. An honor graduate of William & Mary in 1776.


He Received 400 acres from his father, Joseph Eggleston. He bought 114 acres in 1797 and 82 acres in 1798. In 1803, he bought another 134 acres. Was in the US House of Representatives from 1798-1801--a Democratic Republican. Had three children with Sallie Meade, his first wife. Then married his first cousin Judith Cary Eggleston in 1799 and had two other children.


At the conclusion of the war he turned his attention to literature. He was cut off in the flower of his age by the effects of an amputation of a disordered limb. He was offered the position of marshal of Virginia, but declined and recommended his old friend, Major Joseph Scott.


His will was written Feb 5, 1811 and probated Feb 28, 1811. He was buried at Grub Hill Church in Amelia Co, VA.

III. Edward Smith((3)) (Mary Jaquelin((2)) (married John Smith), Edward Jaquelin((1))), son of John Smith, of Shooter's Hill, and Mary Jaquelin, his wife, b. June 11, 1752; d. 1826.


He removed, with his brother John, from Northumberland Co., in 1773, and settled near Winchester on an estate which he named "Smithfield." He was a Federalist, while his brother was a Democrat. He bore the title of Colonel, presumably for revolutionary services, though the matter has never been verified. Married (June 22, 1777) Elizabeth Bush, daughter of Philip Bush, of Winchester, sister of Catherine Norton, née Bush, who married Col. John Ambler, of Jamestown. She d. 1832. They both died at "Smithfield."
