I think the Terrell Genealogy of 1934 has merged Anne's brother
Joel with Anne's father.... that it should be...William Terrell
& Susannah Waters as parents of Joel Terrell Sr & Hannah (?) as
parents of Anne (married David Lewis) and Joel Jr (married Sarah
Oxford), instead of...William Terrell & Susannah Waters as
parents of Anne (married David Lewis) and Joel Jr (married Sarah
Oxford).
Still trying to prove it, but that direction makes the most
sense to me at the moment. Subject to change as new developments
come along.
The Terrell Family history, as far as I'm concerned is a
complete mudtrap. Apparently only two children of William and
Susannah Terrell can be proven -- Henry and David -- and
anything else is unsubstantiated guesswork. I've got a copy of
the Celeste Barnhill book on the Terrells from 1923, and
apparently it is the wrong one to have since most people quote
from the Emma Dickens version.
As you know, William Terrell Lewis's Genealogy says that David
Lewis's wife was Miss Terrell, sister of Joel Terrell, possibly
daughter of Joel. WTL knew how to hedge his bets. I'm trying to
find WTL's source for that, and after reading some of the
letters from the Terrell family to WTL --- the Terrells were in
complete disarray about their family tree prior to 1750. I don't
think there is any solid support that David's wife is Anne. I
don't think there is any solid support that Anne and Joel's
parents were William and Susannah Terrell. All that is currently
supporting that is somebody's guesstimate that has been repeated
100 times and it has become "traditionally speaking, it is
commonly accepted that Anne Terrell was the wife of David
Lewis...."
I started trying to figure out where some of the Lewis children
got their names.... assuming that they were meaningfully named
after parents, grandparents, or important family friends, and
ended up with with a missing generation in the Terrell family
that supports WTL's idea that Anne Terrell's father was named
Joel. At this point, no, I'm not ready to approach the National
Genealogical Society and change history, but there are several
of us that are approaching this and combining efforts to try to
untangle it."
