Notes

RESEARCHING: Your input appreciated.
Surname Spellings: DeHay - Dehay - De La haye - DeHais - de Hay - D'Hay.

"The Huguenots of Colonial South Carolina" by Arthur Henry Hirsch, Ph.D, Duke Univer. Press, 1928 Spartanburg, SC Lib: St. John's Berkeley: the Huguenot settlement of St. John's Berkeley, as it became known after 1706, was the child of the Orange Quarter and the Santee sections. Located near the fertile banks of the Cooper river, 30 miles nearer Charles Town than the santee region. A far more favorable place in which to live than was the Santee River Dist. this colony is said to have been led by Anthony Cordes, MD, who had arr in Charles Town in 1686, with 10 families of Huguenots. They were organized into a church by the Rev Florente Trouillart, colleague of the Rev. Elias Prioleau, of Charles Town.

Names of French families in the early records: Land Warrants; Probate Court records; etc formed the Julien List, ed. 1888. De Hay & Marion are on this list.

The MARIONS lived at Belle Isle Plantation. No Huguenot church was maintained there after 1706, but the vestry book of St. Stephen's Parish, (1754) and the SC Gazettes indicate that the French Protestants lived there and were affiliated as members and officers of the Established Church.

The French Church of Santee was numberically probably the strongest to be found in the province outside of Charles Town. One hundred families were settled there by 1700. The church building was situated on the spot that after 1695 was the center of the village of French Jamestown, on the margin of the Santee River, overlooking the stream.

--- Lindsay and Hay were related in Scotland, and Hay came from de la Haye --
Susie "mail.unr.net"

Abraham De Haye (fils de Pierre) et Madeline and the date Dec 8, 1700 as the most likely parents of a son Jean Andre who married Margarett O'Carroll in 1729. She stated her oldest brother was an elder in the Second Presbyterian Church in Charleston. The male line of the DeHay family is not on record in SC naturalization files, but it appears in Hirch's book, "Settlers in Manakintown," VA and the name is in Agnew's book concerning French refugees in England. "The corporation of Yonghal, in Essex, devised a part of the strand to John Dehays in 1728 - he had a son James."

In SC Statues at Large, Vol. 2, p. 132; A list of the French who signed the Oath of Naturalization, and many of the same names appear in Transactions of the Huguenot society of SC, No. 5 in a "Liste Des Francois et Swisses Refugrez en Caroline qui souhaittent de 'etre naturalizes Anglois". "Nicholas Bochet, ne a Nanteul--en Brye, fils de Nicholas Bochet et de Marguerite Petit, Suzanne Dehays, sa femme, Suzanne, leur lille, nee en France. Pierre et Nicholas, nez en Caroline". The fact that one son is evidently named for Nicholas and his father, suggests that "Pierre" is named for Suzanne's father.

In vol. 53 Transactions of the Huguenot Society, p. 33; "Act to make aliens free of this part of the Province," dated June 3 1697: "Nicholas Bochet, native de Nanthiel - les - Meaux, Susanne Deshais, sa fille, native de Fublainne, Province de Brie en France.
Suzanne DeHais married Nicholas Bochet, in SC. May be a sister of John De Hay, but shows neither John nor James in any records of this family down to the third generation.

The Hugenot Society of London, The French Church of Threadneedle Street, London, lists many of the De La Haye families, but I am not aware if any have been identified as this John's parents.

One Isaac de Hay came in Le Nasseau to VA in 1700; a record of the baptism of a Charles de la Hay and a James De Hay in VA;
Also Isaac De hay in MD with a son named Arthur.

Tyler's Qtr, 7 Vol. p. 179; Charles de la hay, born 20 Sep 1773 in Albemarle Parish, Surry Co. VA.

Hotten's Persons of Quality ....p. 296 lists The Virgin of Hampton, Master Weare, and John De La hay, Merchant who hath taken the Oath of Allegiance 30th of Mar 1639/40. on page 297 lists A seaman, Daniel De La Hay.

VA Wills - Vol X shows the will of Matthew Delahay proved 24 Jun 1696.

Wm & Mary Qtr, 19 Vol. p. 57 -Will of William Kelly proved by one Rene de la Hay of St. Margaret's, Westminster Co. Middlesex wit prved May 10, 1708.

VA Land patents Book I page 437, Gringall Dalahay transf tract in Henrico Co. 11 July 1637 to Richard Green for transp. of his wife Sarah Dalahay. Page 783, Gringall Delahaye was transp. to Henrico 10 Aug 1641.

"Many Huguenots from the Henrico-goochland settlement removed to NC in the vicinity of New Bern, NC."

David Dehay, age 45 years, ht 5', 1"; drummer; born in England; enlisted in Cumberland county; served under General Andrew Lewis in French & Indian War. between 1758-1763.

The descendants of John Dehay proved their allegiance to their adopted country by service during the Rev War Indents:

Abstracts of SC Wills 1670-1740: Isaac Lesesne, St. Thomas and St. Denis Parish, Planter. Will date 14 Sep 1736; proved 14 Jan 1736/7; recorded 25 Jan 1736/7, page 406. Mentions Mr. Dehay, Sr. and his wife. This could be John Andre and Margarett Caroll who were married in 1729 and had a son John Jr. born in 1731.

Abstracts of SC Wills 1740-1760: William Sanders, St. Thomas Parish, Berkeley Co., Planter. Will is dated 24 Apr 1741; proved 4 June, 1741; recorded 28 Sep 1741, page 45. Mentions: All real and personal estate to be sold at "Publik Sale"; old Mrs. Dehay; several other names. Exors: Mr. Isaac Lesesne.

This does not appear to be the same Dehay reference as in the other will but the name Isaac Lesesne appears in both abstracts.
