"Mr Jones was a very distinguished and influential lawyer in Western Virginia. Represented Frederick county in the House of Burgess from 1748 to 1754. Appointed Kings Attorney. Lived near Bogata, Va. 'the man with the celestial name and the very uncelestial temper.' There is a story that a judge reprimanded another attorney for making Mr. Jones swear so. In April 1722, Gabriel Jones, son of John and Elizabeth was admitted as a scholar of the Blue-coat School, Christ’s Hospital, London. On the presentation of Mr. Thomas Sanford. There he remained seven years, from 1732 to 1739. Under the date of April 12, 1739, appears the following entry on the records of the school: "Gabriel Jones is this day taken and discharged from the charges of this hospital forever by Elizabeth Jones, his Mother, and by Mr. John Houghton of Lyon’s Inn, in the county of Middlesex, solicitor in the High court of Chancery, with whom he is to serve six years." At 21 years of age Gabriel Jones was admitted to the bar, having served out his term of apprenticeship. The Jones family were of "gentle blood", but reduced circumstances. Their crest and coat of arms used by the family were identical with that used by William Jones, the noted scholar and Orientalist, indicating a relationship with that celebrated man. One of Mr. Jones’ descendants preserves some old coin, on the paper-wrapping of which is written, in Gabriel Jones’ own handwriting: "This is the patrimony I receive from my Mother. From my Father I received nothing. Gabriel Jones." His home was in the valley of Virginia, on the Shenendoah River, and his farm adjoined the farms of his brothers-in-law, Thomas Lewis, John Frogg, John Madison, and his friend Peachy R Gilmer."

"Col. Preston, Col. Thomas Lewis, of Rockingham, Gen. Andrew Lewis, of Botetourt, Mr. John Madison, of Augusta, and Col. Fleming engaged Mr. Gabriel Jones, an Englishman, to select for them libraries in London. This Mr. Jones was Mr. Jefferson's first partner in the practice of law. A good selection of the classics, ancient history, the distinguished poets of England, "The Dictionary of Arts and Science" a sort of encyclopedia, with much polemic and religious production constituted the libraries. I would observe that the use of these books gave to each family possessing them a station which outranked, very many wealthier families than the above-named."

Gabriel Jones, the "Valley Lawyer," was born six miles from Williamsburg, of English parents, May 1724. On the death of his father, his mother, with Gabriel, returned to London, and he entered a solicitor's office. On attaining his majority, he returned to America. His patrimony was in Frederick County, Virginia, and after a short stay, all his property, except "Vaucluse," in Frederick County, was sold, and he moved to Rockingham County. In 1750, he married, as her second husband, Margaret Strother, the oldest of thirteen children of William Strother and Margaret Watts, in Stafford County, Virginia. Bishop Meade, Vol. 2, p. 325, and all her descendants, speak of her in reverential terms. Their only son was Colonel Strother Jones.
