ROBERT (Alexander) de IRVINE 4th Laird of Drum

____ - ____

ID Number: I74851

  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2142]
Father: WILLIAM (Thomas) de IRWYN 2nd Laird of Drum

Family 1 : ELIZABETH KEITH

Notes

Sir Alexander Irvine, third Laird of Drum was killed at Harlaw in single combat with Maclean of Duart known as Red Hector of the Battles - who Alexander also killed. On his way to Harlaw Alexander stopped at a point now called the Drumstone where it is possible to see both Harlaw and Drum. Here he had a premonition that he would die and made his younger brother, (some versions have it as his son) Robert, promise to marry his widow Elizabeth Keith - with whom he had not consummated his marriage - and so help bring about an end to the long running feud with the Keiths. This Robert did, changing his name to Alexander and causing considerable confusion for historians because there were now two 4th Lairds.

Josie, Mary Catherine McNish m. Joseph Adams Scott Nov. 27, 1806, in what is now Bluffton, Beaufort Co., SC. James McNish the older was granted land in Goose Creek for his service in the Revolutionary War.
The older John and James were sons of John McNish (the first that we know of). The first John's will was proved Mar 25, 1748. This John was connected to Stoney Creek Independent Congregational Church and (Circular) Congregational Church in Charleston, S.C. He had land in St. John's Colleton. John 2's first wife was Agnes Ann Black (Shwartz) who died in childbirth. His second was Mary Catherine Keall. John the second was connected to a David Alexander:
"Dedimus issued to John Lewis Bourquin Esq to qualify John McNish admor of
the Esta. of David Alexander Decd. Feb. 25th. 1774." p. 96 and p. 109
"Citation granted to John McNish of St. Peters Parish to admir on the Esta. of David Alexander late of Prince Williams Parish Decd as next of Kin. to be read in the Parish Ch ofr Prince William & returned Certified. Feb 2d. 1774." (Probate Records of SC, Vol. 2. Brent Holcomb. 1978. Southern Historical Press, Jorunal of the Court of Ordinary 1771-1775.)
It seems to me that there is a definite connection. Can you tell me more about David Alexander? We had thought that Margrett, wife of John the first, might be an Alexander and that would explain the "next of kin."

John McNish, b. Mar 1743, d. Jul 17, 1800 and his twin brother James, his sons John and James, his mother Margrett McNish, his wife Mary Catherine Keall McNish, and his daughter Mary Catherine McNish. The ages and the location are correct.

I do not know if either James was married but believe it quite likely and that one of them was the father of Caroline McNish--I have absolutely no proof of this. The younger John had a daughter Anne Caroline McNish who died as a child. I do know that the last location we have for the younger James was Charleston in 1844.
I would be really interested in finding out more about the grave in the Presbyterian Cemetery. I believe the older John is buried in the family cemetery at Bluffton and I know the younger John is buried at Laurel Grove in Savannah. I do not know where either of the James are buried or where John, the father of the older John and James was buried.
This is my husband's line and I have tried to connect it to the Caroline who married McCants without luck so far. Perhaps someone else has the key.
Linda Cox McNish
