1850 Census - Grayson Co, KY
# 780 Whitely, William, 43, VA; Julia (nee Smith), 34; Julia A.,
21 (d/o Malsalie); Stephen, 12; Martha, 6; Clarrissa, 3 (she d.
20 Dec 1858; named as d/o Julia Ann); and Elizabeth, 1.
NOTE: Although it is probable that Malsalie was Stephen's
mother, it is possible that Julia was. She would have been about
15 or 16 at the time of his birth. It is more likely, however,
that Julie married William about 1843 and became the mother of
Martha about 1844.
William Whitely married 3/w Sinai A. Askins/Adkins bet 1850 c/r
and his death on 3 Jul 1855. Since this marriage is not shown in
the 1852-1855 marriage records of Grayson Co, I am guesstimating
that they were married in late 1850 or 1851. She appears on
records as Sina, Sinai, Cina and Cinna A. Adkins / Askins.
Here is Sinai or Sina Askins's 1850 Grayson County census
record:
#816 Day, Jacob, 34, $400 R.E.; Amy A. (nee Amy Ann Hazel), 27,
VA; Mary
M., 3; Jacob T., 1; Day, Joseph, 85, VA; Margaret (nee Brooks /
w/o Joseph),
78, VA; and Adkins, Sina, 37, TN.
Cena Whitely, 40, widow, b. TN, & Lenard Geary, 55, widower, b.
Hampshire Co, VA, were married 11 Mar 1857 in Grayson Co, KY.
1860 Census - Grayson Co, KY - Falls of Rough - p48 - 31 Jul
# 311 Gary, Cinna A., 42, TN, farm manager (3w/o William
Whitely); Whitely,
Martha B., 15 (d/o William Whitely & Julia Smith); Elizabeth, 10
(d/o William
Whitely & Julia Smith); Stephen, 22, Farm Laborer (s/o William
Whitely);
Elizabeth (nee Day / w/o Stephen), 23 (m. 3 Apr 1857); Cina A.,
1 (b. 15
Mar 1859); and Gary, Nancy, 99, MD, (Sina's mother-in-law and
mother of Leonard Gary).
Living next door to Cinna A. / Sinai A. (Askins) Whitely - Geary
was her oldest step-daughter, Julia Ann Whitely with two
children.
#312 Quiggins, Wash, 39, farmer; Rose A(nna)(nee Green), 39;
Eli, 12; James N., 9; Joseph, 7; John W., 2; and >>> Whitley,
Julian(n), 29, Serving, William S., 5; and Mary A., 11/12.
Well, I don't know if I solved the problem of who was the mother
of Stephen or just added more questions to the mix. I think his
mother was probably Malsalie A. Conley, but I could be wrong.
Hope this helps some - All for now, VirJean Potter Bozarth"
