The fallen were under the command of Thornton and were about 400
strong. They were camped in a field north of what is now Camden
Point. They were the victims of a surprise attack by the Union
coming from Weston and led by Ford and Jennison.
The fallen soldiers were buried where they died and later moved
to the old cemetery north of Camden Point. The attack happened
July 13, 1863. A woman, who has family in this cemetery has
tried with very little success to clean the area up. The
cemetery is full of weeds, brambles, fallen stones and years of
neglect.
Since there is a historical monument here, I was hoping that
this would help with the restoration of the cemetery. My only
connection with this cemetery is an interest in historic
preservation and the respect of our ancestors. I hope you can
guide me in the right direction for help on this project. Thank
you, Barb Lemley
