Message Board Post:

Perhaps others know clues to sorting out the Penn families in Maryland from this treasure of a letter from 1854:

Letter to Eleanor [nee: Henniken] Curry Stapleton from Tabitha C. Penn dated August 17th, 1854. Transcribed by Fay J Coffman, Fort Worth, Texas on June 26, 1975. Eleanor was the daughter of Matthew Henniken and Elizabeth Penn married 1801 in Charles County, MD:

Dear Niece, August 17th, 1854

Your letter came daily to hand and I was very glad to hear from you all. I am very diseased in my limbs yet and do not expect to be here long. William Bateman's wife and Manuel [Emanuel] Penn both died this summer ____ ____ ago and ____ uncle James Penn died the twelfth of August 1853 with a violent dysentery. Your cousin, Thomas Penn's oldest son is married his name is John Francis. I have not seen him for about thirteen years. I live about 26 miles from him. There has been a great many deaths here with dysentery. Crops is very sorry here this year owning to the drought. There will not be more than a third of crops made. It is supposed that corn will be very high. Last winter was the coldest I ever experienced and this has been the hottest summer and the driest I ever experienced. Have not had a letter from Hanson Penn since last winter. Your relations is generally well as far as I now. I want to see you and your sisters very bad. You feel near and dear to me but I never expect to see you in this world. I am striving to meet all my parting friends on the banks of deliverance where parting is no more. My love to you and your children and their wives and your sisters. And I remain your affectionate aunt until death. -- Tabitha C. Penn, 51 years old.

On the reverse side of the letter paper:

Sweet is thought, the promise sweet
That friends long severed friends shall meet
That kindred souls on earth disjoined (?)
Shall meet from earthly drops refined
There mortal cares and sorrow o'er
And mingle hearts to part no more.
