Lewis Sanders writes, "My sister Lydia, was a brunette, had
black eyes & hair, about the size of her oldest sister. She was
afflicted with asthma & on this account my father, John Sanders,
gave her a larger portion than any of the other chiildren. She
m. Hugh Sanders Gatewood & they comenced housekeeping on land
given to them by my fahter soon after they were married. John
Sanders always gave his ch a farm, cos, 2 horses & slaves, as
well as necessary household furniture. The farm was around 200
acres. The slaves given to Lydia were of the Easter family, the
most likely family of negroes of any in the county. Easter was
fine looking negro woman, active & sprightly. Her husband was
Big Tom, he could do as much work with an ax as any two common
men.
"The Gatewoods moved to the Ohio River Valley (neafr Ghent, KY)
& settled between his bro-in-law, Joseph Bledsoe, & his
bro-in-law, James Smith. Lydia d. there. She was b 1768."
"Hugh Sanders was a man of good sound sense. He married his
cousin Lydia Sanders. They lived about 2 miles east of Ghent,
KY. When Lydia died, he afterwards m. Polly Craig, the dau of
Elijah Craig (his wife was a Smith). Hugh moved to Shelby Co.
IN soon after his second marriage. They had several ch. He
died in IN."
Hugh & Henry moved to Shelby co., IN bet 1820/1822, bought land
in 1822. both d. bet 1830/40.On 12 Sep 1787, Hugh S. Gatewood
signed petition #43 of Fayette Co. KY
On 27 Sep 1796, Franklin Co. KY Deeds Bk A p. 134, Benjamin &
Nancy Craig to Hugh S. Gatewood, 200 Acres on OH River, 10 Miles
above mouth of KY river Franklin Co. Wit: Peter Gatewood, John
Sanders, Joseph Bledsoe.
Hugh, Gallatin Co. Magistrate of first County Court 14 May 1799;
a Lt in 22nd Reg 10 July 1800 Franklin Co.
""Her neice Minerva Rightor wrote: Aunt Polly married Hugh
Gatewood, a gentleman from the Vicinity of Lexington, the son of
a very wealthy planter of Kentucky. I have often visited his
father three miles from Lexington. They lived in Great Style. So
have I visited General Henry several times soon after the girls
married. They also lived in Grand Style. Aunt Polly had six
children. They lived within two miles of his father near
Lexington. We have lost all knowledge of that family. I cannot
tell where a single member of that family lives."
