675 - King Aescwine of Wessex checks the military advance of
King Wulfhere and his Mercian army at the Battle of
Biedanheafde. Death of King Wulfhere of Mercia. He is succeeded
by his brother, Aethelred I, and, nominally at least, by his
son, Berthwald, who takes on overlordship of the Hwicce and
Wessex border area as sub-King, perhaps of Hendrica and
Chilternset. King Aethelred of Mercia founds the monastery at
Breedon-on-the-Hill on the site of St. Hardulph's hermitage.
676 - King Aethelred of Mercia invades Kent in an attempt to
enforce overlordship and diminish Kentish influence in Surrey
and London. His armies cause so much destruction to the diocese
of Rochester that the see is abandoned.
c.679 - King Aethelred I of Mercia marries Princess Osthryth,
sister of King Ecgfrith of Northumbria.
679 - The Synod of Hatfield is held. The armies of King
Aethelred I of Mercia and King Ecgfirth of Northumbria clash at
the Battle of the Trent. Sub-King Aelfwine of Deira is killed in
the fighting and Mercia retakes Lindsey. Bishop Eadhaed of
Lindsey is expelled. He becomes Abbot of Ripon. Northumbria is
properly united.

(dec'd), Margaret Wilburn, Jane Weeks, David Norman, Jesse

citing Union Wills B:301-303.)
Robert Martin of St. James Goose Creek Parish, Charleston
District, SC, served in the Revolutionary War under General
Francis Marion, according to a book by Michael J. Heitzler,
entitled HISTORIC GOOSE CREEK, SOUTH CAROLINA, 1670-1980, (c)
1983, Southern Historical Press, P. 137. Also serving from Goose
Creek were Andrew DeHay and John DeHay. [Robert Martin
had sisters-in-law who married DeHays. See discussion to
follow.]
Heitzler's history seems to prove that Robert Martin was
residing in Charleston District at some time before or during
the Revolution.
Another publication listing 2500 men who served under General
Francis Marion also included the name Robert Martin.
Supporting the conclusion that this was Sgt. Robert Martin, the
veteran of the Revolutionary War, are two important facts.
First, Jean (nee McCants) Lindsay, widow of James Lindsay whose
estate was settled in Williamsburg District / Co. in 1797, made
her will in Union County, SC, in 1813, naming Robert Martin
[Jr.] and Janet Scott Martin as her grandchildren. The will,
thus, proves that Mrs. Jean Lindsay had a daughter who married a
Mr.Martin. Neither the daughter nor the son-in-law were
identified in the will. By implication, the daughter was
deceased before 1813. The fact that this daughter was also not
named in the estate stettlement of James Lindsay suggests that
this daughter died by 1797, place unknown, but likely in either
Charleston District or Union District, SC.
The 1813 will of Jean Lindsay also proves that the Robert Martin
who was residing in Charleston District in 1790 was surrounded
by Mrs. Jean Lindsay's family and relatives: several daughters
who married DeHays, with their families; probably Mrs. Jean
Lindsay's own family, as a "_?_ Linsey" family was enumerated on
successive lines of the census with Robert Martin's family and
James Lindsay was not found elsewhere in SC in 1790; and some of
the McCants relatives of Mrs. Jean Lindsay were also in the same
neighborhood in Charleston District in 1790.
Second, James (M.) Martin, son of Robert Martin, Sr., who was
born in Charleston [District] in 1788, per his tombstone in
Randolph Co., GA, also resided in Union County, as proved by
James' 1811 marriage to "Hester" Bogan in Union County, by
several Union County deeds of James and Hester Martin, and by
the 1820 census record of the James Martin family in Union
County.
The presence of Robert Martin, Sr., in the same county with Mrs.
Jean Lindsay and with James M. Martin argues strongly that he
was the Robert Martin formerly of Charleston District.
The Robert Martin who was enumerated in Charleston District in
1790, page 36, had three sons under age 16, or born after 1774.
These three would have been between the ages of 10-26 in 1800.
The above 1800 census shows 4 probable sons ages 10-25, or born
1775-1790, and a possible son over 25 years, or born 1774 or
earlier. It is not a perfect match for the 1790 census of the
Robert Martin family but such deviations were not uncommon from
census to census.
The 1800 census of Robert Martin in Union County could be
interpreted several different ways. For example, Robert Martin
could have been a widow with a married child and family residing
with him in 1800. Or, he may have been married and his wife was
under the age of 45 in 1800 and he had a son who was about age
26 in 1800, or born about 1774.
In 1790, Robert Martin was residing in St. James Goose Neck
Creek Parish [of the Church of England] in Charleston District,
South Carolina. Enumerated in the same parish on the same page
of the census was John C. Martin, possibly a brother or a
cousin. John C. Martin of St. James Parish appeared to be single
in 1790 but owed 22 slaves. He was perhaps an older man.
Robert Martin, R. W. veteran, was possibly married to Agnes
("Nancy") LINDSAY as late as 1786. This estimate is derived from
the fact that the couple had three sons in 1790. It is unlikely
they had three sons in less than four years. So it appears
likely that Robert and Agnes married sometime between [1790
minus 16] 1774 and 1786.
Agnes LINDSAY (possibly nicknamed "Nancy"), daughter of James
and Jean (McCants) Lindsay was the mother of Robert Martin [Jr.]
and Janet Scott Martin, both born after the 1790 census was
taken. Agnes Lindsay Martin was apparently deceased when Mrs.
Jean Lindsay wrote her will in 1813. The fact that she was not
mentioned in the 1797 settlement of the estate of James Lindsay
suggests that Agnes Lindsay deceased before 1797.
The report in DAR records that the wife of Sgt. Robert Martin
was nicknamed "Polly" is erroneous. There was a different Robert
Martin who resided in Spartanburg County, SC, who had a wife who
was called "Polly" Martin. No Polly Martin records have been
found in either Charleston District, SC, or Union County, SC.
"Robert Martin, Sr." of Union Co., SC, had a wife named
Elizabeth in 1815 when they sold land in Union County. Did
Robert Martin, Sr., remarry to Elizabeth __?__ prior to the 1800
census? If so, Elizabeth was born between 1766 and 1774, based
on her age ranges reported on the Union County census in 1800
and 1810. Robert and Elizabeth Martin probably removed from
Union County, SC, in or after 1815 and before the 1820 census.
It is not known when or where either died.
The children's records to this family are probably children of
Robert Martin. There were others who have not been identified,
according to census records, assuming that Robert Martin, Sr.,
of Union County, SC, was the same person as Robert Martin of the
1790 census of Chareston District, SC.
The report in an approved DAR application that Robert Martin had
a daughter named Frances Martin who was born in 1782 is proved
to be erroneous by the 1790 census, as there were no daughters
in the home of Robert Martin in Charleston District in 1790.
In her book MARTIN AND ALLIED FAMILIES, Lillie Martin Grubbs
said: "Several daughters" [of Robert Martin] "married in SC.
Anyone wishing to come in on this line refer to the Nat. Soc."
[of the Daughters of the American Revolution] "Nos.
97451-88563-223173."
