Notes

From Coleman Book:

May 1, 1753. Dinwiddie County formed from Prince George. The Coleman's then lived in this area and were thereafter in Dinwiddle County.

November 9, 1756. Robert Coleman receives patent from Lord Granville for 157 acres of land in Edgecombe County, North Carolina (later Halifax County).

FROM THE DIARY OF MRS. JENNIE I. COLEMAN
I will begin first with the Coleman's.

They came from Wales to Virginia. I do not know how long ago. They moved into North Carolina, Hallifax County, From which they came to this neighborhood in 1775. There was a large family of them, but I know of only three brothers, Robert, William, and Charles. They soon acquired large tracts of land. Robert, I imagine, was the eldest, and he bought up land that had been granted by King George in 1772 to William Mazyck, also to Joseph Verree, and John Winn, on the headwaters of Beaver Creek. He settled on uncleared land in a quarter of a mile of this home, and lived and died within a mile of the first settlement. He must have had money to have so soon acquired the large area around him. He must have been a man of strong character, and industrious, thrifty habits. His descendants generally have these characteristics, preferring a plain style of living, abhorring show of any kind.

He was Major in the British Army [we have found no documentary proof of this), and I do not know whether he changed before the close of the Revolution. His sons were Whigs. We have a coat of his, in good state of preservation, homespun woven, and made over a hundred years ago.

BEROWALD "the Fleming" INNES

____ - ____

ID Number: I104554

  • RESIDENCE: of Flanders and Moray, Scotland
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3781]

Notes

"INNES - Berowald was in possession of land named after himself at Berowald’s(or Bo’ness, once the third seaport of Scotland, having a considerable trade with the Low Countries) in West Lothian in the 1150s. He was a man of considerable rank and distinction and by a charter of Malcolm IV in 1154, he was given lands in Moray at Innes and Easter Urquhart. In that charter he is described as Berowaldo Flandrensi -Berowald the Fleming. The award was made in recognition of his good services in putting down the rebellious natives of Moray, and one of the charter witnesses was William, son of Freskin, the ancestor of the Murrays. Berowald’s arms are symbolically the same as Freskin’s, with tinctures changed and tressure omitted, as would be proper for a younger member of the family founding his own dynasty." [S3781]
