Mother: Elizabeth "Betsy" BONNER |
John Love, the brother of Charles, moved from NC to AL and there
they met with Rhoda Ham, who was beautiful and very amiable.
They wrote to Charles extolling her many charms. Charles
visited them. John was a Methodist preacher. Sunday they went
to church. Charles attention was soon attracted by one of the
prettiest girls he had ever seen. As soon as they were at home,
he exclaimed, "I saw my future wife today." He was asked to
describe her and when he did so they exclaimed, "Why it is Rhoda
Ham, we know she would just suit you." After Charles married
Rhoda their happiness was complete, but alas, after the birth of
her first child, she had puerperal fever and her mind was never
restored. Charles' devotion never wavered. He slept with each
of their little babes in his arms at night and watched over them
with a Mother's devotion while his meek and gentle wife was
cared for, petted, and caressed as fondly as ever.
