Mother: BEATRICE de VERMANDOIS |
The founder of the house was Hugh Capet. "CAPET, HUGH,
939?-996?, King of France, son of Hugh the Great, duke of
Francia and count of Paris. The origin of the family is
obscure, but the Capetians had long identified themselves with
the Western or French portion of the Carolingian empire, and
with Paris and the Ile de France in particular.
The defense of Paris against the Northmen in the siege of 885
had been led by Eudes (Odo), king of France, 888-898, and
great-grandfather of Hugh. As the Carolingian empire broke up,
the Western Franks looked to the Capetians for leadership.
In 987, on th death of the last Carolingian king, Louis V, Hugh
Capet was elected king. He retained his hold on the throne,
keeping the Holy Roman Emperor, the church, and the Carolingian
claimant to the throne at bay by buying the support of his
feudal neighbors with large gifts of land from the royal domain.
He was able to establish his son on the throne, thereby laying
the foundations of the Capetian, Valois, and Bourbon dynasties
which, in that order, ruled France for more than 800 years. See
Bourbon Family; Valois, House of Capet."
All his legitimate children are with Hedwig:
Beatrice of France (938-987 app.)
Hugues Capet (941-24/10/996)
Emma Capet (945- before 968)
Eudo of Bourgogne (945-23/2/965)
Eudo Heinrich of Bourgogne (948-15/10/1002)
Henri Capet (950-1002)
Then he had an illegitimate child : Heribert of Bourgogne
(940-8/1/971) who became bishop in Auxerre. The mother of the
latter is called Irmgard of Bourgogne (920-948 app.)
Hugues le grand /the great or le Blanc, died 956. earl of Paris
and duke of France. He married Ethilde , etc,[snipped] then
Mathilde, sister of Otto the Great.
Source: LAROUSSE Encyclopédique
There's no mention of Hedwige??
the Larousse is wrong (probably just a slip). Hugh"s Mother was
sister of Otto the Great, but the woman's name was Hedwige
(named after her paternal grandmother). Mathilde was the name
of the woman's mother, the wife of Henry I. taf
