Served as a private (before the battle of the Meadows) in George
Mercer's company (Company M) during the Fort Necessity campaign
of the French and Indian War (Col. Geo. Washington's regiment).
He was wounded by an Indian tomahawk (in the head) as reported
in the Maryland Gazette (Annapolis) 2 Oct 1755. T. Burris fought
at Braddock's defeat in 1755.
He later was to exasperate George Washington by "some sharp
practices" in horse-dealing. Evidently T. Burris rode a mare
which had originally belonged to an officer who was killed,
Washington wanted to sell the horse and give the money to the
officers family; the horse was eventually taken to Washington's
Bullskin Plantation. Burris had ridden the horse from
"Alexandry" to Fort Loudoun. In 1757 T. Burris was paid ten
pounds by the Colony of Virginia as a "recompence for the loss
of his arm in the service of his country (J.H.B. 1752-1758, page
478). In 1757-1758 Burris was a messenger or courier who
delivered letters to and from George Washington and members of
his command. Thomas Burris received two grants of land in
Kentucky: #549 and #552. Each was for 1,000 acres in Fayette
county, KY on 2-mile Creek and both were dated 1 Mar 1784."
In his book, "Genealogical Memoranda of the Quisenberry Family"
(1897), Anderson Chenault Quisenberry gives some information on
Thomas Burrus, Senior, pages 53--54. "Burris is another form of
the name Burrows, Burroughs, Burrace and Burys (also Burrus).
Thomas Burris, the father of Jane Burris (Quisenberry), was a
very wealthy man for his times as his will shows (see Appendix
VII, 5), and he was descended from a family who had been in
Virgnia from the earliest times...Thomas Burris served in the
French and Indiana War, in Captain George Mercer's Company of
the Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel George Washington,
and fought at the battle of the Meadows in 1754, and was one of
the number 'who received the present of a Pistole from the
Country as an acknowledgement of their gallant behavious upon
that occasion' (see "Washington Papers", State Department,
Washington City), and he was one of the detachment that marched
to Augusta some time after the defeat; and, he also fought at
the disastrous Braddock's Defeat, in 1755. For his services in
this war he received a SHARE of the two hundred thousand acres
of land granted under Governor Dinwiddie's proclamation. He
appears to have been a born warrior, for he fought in the
Revolution also, and was granted lands for that service.
The following brief certificate of his service in the Revolution
was furnished by the Chief of the RECORDS and PENSION OFFICE,
Washington, viz:
'It appears from the records of this office that Thomas Burris
enlisted February 23, 1776, as a private in Captain William
Washington's Company, 3d Virginia Regiment of Foot,
Revolutionary War, and his name appears on the muster rolls of
that organization to July, 1777. He is reported with the rank of
Corporal on muster rolls, as follows: Captain John Francis
Mercer's company of this regiment to and including May, 1778;
Captain Robert Powell's company, 3d and 7th Virginia
(consolidated) regiment from May, 1778, to September, 1778;
Captain Robert Powell's company, 3d Virginia regiment, for
October, 1778; Captain John F. Mercer's company, 3d Virginia
regiment to April, 1779; and Captain Valentine Peyton's company,
3d Virginia regiment, to November, 1779.
There is a copy of his will in the above book on page 190. Also,
I have a copy of the abstract of his will in the "Wills of Clark
County Kentucky". Although he never lived in Kentucky, his will
was recorded in Clark County, Kentucky because of heirs there. -
Virginia Rhoades.
Another source (a page from an unknown book; found in Family
Folders Files in the Burrus folder at Winchester, KY Public
Library on 9-8-92): "136 -- Thomas Burrus I: Born Norfolk Va.
Married Frances Tandy, daughter of Roger Tandy of Caroline Co.,
Va. They settled in Orange Co., VA and accumulated a
considerable estate. Thomas lost an arm at the Battle of Great
Meadows in the French and Indian War. He also served in the
Revolutionary War
as a supplier. George Washington personally presented him with a
pistol for bravery. The citation is in Washington's handwriting.
He is referred to as Sgt. Burrus. He apparently was granted
considerable land in Kentucky as a result of his war services.
He gave each of his sons 500 acres and divided another 500 acres
among his daughters. He, himself, never set foot in Kentucky. He
died in Orange Co.,VA in 1789. His will mentions beside wife:
Thomas Burrus, William Tandy Burrus, Roger Burrus, Morning
Burrus, Fanny Burrus, Mildred Burrus, Elizabeth Burrus, Sarah
Ann (Sally) Burrus, Jane BURRUS, Frances Tandy Burrus, and Mary
(Mollie) Burrus."
"Record of Revolutionary Services of Thomas Burrus: Thomas
Burriss enlisted 23 February, 1776, in Capt. William
