John II b 1755 lived in old Cheraw Dist Long Bluff & Greenville
Town, Darlington Co. SC and in GA? before moving to new MS
Territory, Wilkinson Co. MS. Transcribed copy of the 1805
Wilkinson Co. MS census, didn't show any of our Hodges and other
linked surnames there. He is on the 1810-1815 MS list.. Last
record of John Hodges in Darlington was sale of Harrell's estate
1811 (John III m. Pheraby Harrell so this is likely him and he
may have moved to MS after his father had moved.).
John II is listed in many SC Rev War Records; 1st Company of
Rangers, Capt. Sam Wise Esq. commissioned June 18, 1775, and
thru 1781 Capt. Standard's Company.
, p.28-31. "The Early homes were scattered along the river
extending a mile or so westward, and early name of settlemant
was Long Bluff. A court house and jail was built at the Bluff
in 1768. Abt 1785 the name Greeneville came into the record,
the name being in honor of Gen Green of Kings Mtn fame, the
settlement a mile westward, to which the residents began to move
being called Society Hill". In 1777 The St. David's society was
organized, John and Richard Hodges, (surnames King,
Hollingsworth, Brown, & John ANDREWS who appears in Pike Co. MS)
are on the list of subscribers. The Society held its meetings at
the Welsh Meeting House, at the homes of members, at the Long
Bluff Court-house. The St. David's Academy was proposed in
1778, a teacher was hired and the building erected in 1786. The
Society, through the School established by it, St. David's
Academy, was a profound influence in this whole Eastern section
of South Carolina. It made of Society Hill an oasis of
intelligence and culture in the Pee Dee back country.
Areas described in the Darlingtoniana are: Welsh Neck
Settlement founded in 1734, upper part of what is now Darlington
County, Located from Crooked Creek above the Red Bluff below,
embracing the swamp several miles across on the west side of the
Pee Dee River in the upper part of what is now Darlington
County. 1737 settlers were mostly families from Pennsylvania,
leader, James James, Esq.
The Davis Field - Site of the home of Evan Davis, grandfather of
Jefferson Davis. He emigrated from the North about 1756 and
later the Davis family moved to Wilkinson Co. MS. Located in
Society Hill, the nearest building St. David's Academy. p. 166
It is said that our John Hodges belonged to the Cashaway Baptist
Church.
Mechanicsville Baptist Church had three names: first Cashaway,
then Mount Pleasant, and finally Mechanicsville. She is the
mother church of Brownsville in Marlboro County, of Black Creek
and of the First Baptist Church of Darlington. In abt 1786
Cashaway listed 14 of its members had 'Joined over Black Creek'
Martha Norwood, Abel Waddle and wife, John Sanders, George and
Henry King were on this list. p. 121
Children of John Hodges, II (b 1755) comes from the Family Bible
which in 1960 was owned by Mrs. Alice Brew of Silver Springs,
MD. and from Mrs. J. B. Ariail of Dallas, TX. A Copy was sent to
L. ANDREA Collection@ SC Archives by Mrs. Alice Brew, Silver

1800 CENSUS - DARLINGTON DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA p. 113
JOHN HODGES - males 45 & upward = 1 [John, II Sr., age 45]
16 under 26 = 1 [John, III Jr., 17]
females 26 under 45 = 1 [Ann. wife]
16 under 26 = 1 [Elizabeth, 16]
under 10 = 1 [Dorothy, 8]
slaves = 18
The above census shows my interpretations as to the individuals
in the household (to the right in brackets). I based John's age
on date of 1755. All children are accounted for except Ann
Jenima, who was supposed to have been born in 1799. (age
difference might indicate that Ann is the 2nd wife).
The Darlington-Marlborugh County, SC, Hodge(s) appear to be a
family to themselves. Unfortunately, the information may not be
available to reconstruct this family with proof of
relationships. John Hodge(s) was most likely the son of John
Hodge(s), Sr., who came to and settled in the Cheraw District
sometime in the early 1750's. (See tax lists for the late
1770's that show a John, Sr. and a John, Jr.). As best as I can
tell, John, Sr. lived most of his life in the area of Marlboro
County and attended the Welsh Neck Church. Some time after
John, Jr., married he moved across the Pedee River into
Darlington County and attended the Cashaway Church.

Subject: Re: Welcome William HODGES
Hello There! I haven't any specific ideas for you but do want
to keep in touch because I can't help but to believe somehow
Welcome Hodges is related to my line. I'm a direct decendant
from Thomas & Elizabeth: Child Jesse Monroe Hodges (m) Catherine
Stanley, they had 12 children of which I have tracked down FOR
SURE 8 of them, think I have another 3 and still trying to
determine the 4th. - - Jesse & Wife born in NC & SC moved to
Indiana and on to Missouri. They left Missouri in 1846-47 with
7 of their 12 children and went to Oregon.
Just days before he left: Jesse deeded all his land to a
Welcome Hodges, a batchelor, still a batchelor 1850 census. In
my searching there seems to be 3 generations of Welcome Hodges.
Something to note here is that this Welcome may have been
Jesse's oldest son or even possibly a brother. I reason this
because a son (MY DIRECT) Charles Monroe Hodges had just married
Harriet Scott Berry there in Platte County Missouri and did not
go with Jesse & family to Oregon, AND the land was not left to
him. Charles followed to Oregon in 1853.
Thank you for your attention; let's keep in touch. Until, Diana
