Notes

"Gerrard Long, the first born son of John Long and Mary Haynes, presumably received his name from Elder John Gerrard, a Baptist minister who emigrated to Kentucky from Virginia. Samuel Haycraft’s HISTORY OF ELIZABETH-TOWN, KENTUCKY, speaks of Elder John Gerrard on page 14. It was on the 17th day of June, 1781, under the shadow of a green sugar tree near Haynes’ Station, a Baptist church was constituted with eighteen members, by Elder William Taylor and Joseph Barnett, preachers, with Elder John Gerrard who was ordained first pastor. The church was called the Regular Baptist Church of Severn's Valley. All the members and preacher emigrated from Virginia and Elder Gerrard might have been emphatically styled "the voice of one crying in the Wilderness." Seeking food and forced to hunt wild game in the wilderness a hunting party one day was surprised by a band of Indians. All churchmen escaped except Elder Gerrard who was lame. He was never heard from again.
If this be not the source from whence Gerrard Long received his name, that source is unknown to this writer. He had come into Kentucky from Virginia, as the John Long family had done, in later years (1789.)."

Notes

"John Newell, born 1734 in Prince George County, Va. and died January 27, 1792, in Warren County, N.C.. In 1751 he married Lucy Hyde, born in 1738 in Northampton County, Va. If this is accurate, she was only 13 when they married, but that was not too unusual for that time. She died in 1803 in Warren County. They had the following children:
William, born February, 1752.
Elizabeth, born 1756
Rebecca , born 1760
John, Jr. , born 1761
Edward, born 1763
David Hyde, born 1765
Sally, born 1767
Polly Hyde, born 1769
Several years ago I ordered a copy of John, Sr.'s will from the N. C. Archives. Wills usually list the heirs in the order of their birth. In his will, Elizabeth is listed first, then William. The others are listed the same as above. I won't go to the trouble of listing the descent of the others, but there are two I am concerned with--William and David Hyde.

According to WFT records, William married twice, Nancy S. in 1769, and they had three children: John, born 1770. Peter, born 1775, and William, Jr., born 1781. Nancy died in 1787. He married Nancy Moody in May, 1788. They had one child, William E., born November 18, 1806.
The only known marriage for David Hyde was to Nancy Cheek. it is recorded in N.C. marriage bonds as taking place in Warren County in 1802. Some online records give their marriage date as much earlier, but I've found no record of an earlier marriage. The WFT records state they had a son, Peter, born in 1803. Then they go on to state that he married Susannah Hail in 1795. Unless they had a time machine that is no longer in existence, there ain't no way.

In view of the fact that William, John, Sr., and John, Jr. are listed in the 1790 Warren County census and have the same entry number, they either lived together or very close to each other. In the 1800 census, Edward, William, David, John, Jr., and Peter have the same entry number.

All except Peter inherited land from John, Jr. It makes more sense to me that Peter, William's son, born in 1775, is the Peter in the Warren County census. In 1790, he would have been too young to be listed as a head of family. If the Peter who was William's son moved to Mecklenburg County and married Polly Simpson, who is this Peter and where did he come from? He certainly could not be the son of David Hyde and Nancy Cheek Newell. David Hyde wasn't born until 1765. It would be almost impossible for him to have a son old enough to marry in 1795. Do you know the answer to this puzzle?
In the 1790 census, there was a William Newell in Mecklenburg County. Could he have been th father of the Peter Newell who married Polly Simpson?" Carol Rackley
