Mother: TALIAFERRO |
"He was appointed Cornet in Col. Bland's Regiment of the
Virginia State Line on the 16th of June 1776 -- was promoted to
a Lieutenancy on the 15th of March 1777, and was promoted to the
rank of Captain in that Corps by a Resolution of Congress on the
7th of April 1778. ...
William Lindsay was a Captain in the Virginia Continental Line,
and that on the 26th of June 1783, a warrant for 4000 acres of
bounty land, issued to said Officer by the State of Virginia for
a 3 years service ... " He was wounded in a skirmish in January
1778, which affected him for the remainder of his life. This
information about William's military source is from another
source, not the Lindsay's of America.
On page 236 of the Lindsays of America, it says that William and
Mattie took a voyage to Newport, RI in the summer of 1797, and
that William died there on Sept. 1st, and he was buried there in
the Trinity Churchyard. It says, He left his widow with six
children, all young, and a vast estate."
On page 237, the children of William and Mattie Lindsay are
listed: (no number III, is skipped)"
The timeline for William of Norfolk, he was born around 1750,
and died in 1797. William of Yogohania was born about the same
time. I've seen him in family trees as born in 1757, but I
think it may have been earlier. William of Yogohania was
reported to have 6 children, and there is only information about
3 in the Lindsays of America. Even that information is sketchy.
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Volume 102
Mrs. Alice Ferard Howard. DAR ID Number: 101229
Born in South Charleston, Ohio. Wife of Elmer G. Howard.
Descendant of Capt. William Lindsay, as follows:
1. William Henry Ferard (1837-1911) m. 1865 Lucinda Lindsay
(1839-1911).
2. John Lindsay (1810-60) m. 1830 Margaret Gray (1811-94).
3. William Lindsay m. Nancy Ferguson.
William Lindsay (1757-1838) served as captain of 2nd troop,
Colonel Bland's regiment, Lee's Legion. He was born in Virginia;
died in New Richmond, Ohio.
I have been told that many times these DAR records are
incorrect, and I believe this one is incorrect. The William
Lindsay who married Nancy Ferguson was the son of Hezekiah, and
he died in 1864. The William Lindsay who was in Bland's regiment
was from Norfolk County, and he died in 1797.
William of Norfolk lived out his life in Virginia. He died while
on vacation in Rhode Island in 1797. when William of Norfolk
died in 1797, what happened to his widow, Mattie Fox?
Need info on William Lindsay or Lindsey born 1751 in Caroline,
VA. wife (Mattie Fox) and her family, and the name of William's
mother ( I think she was a Taliaferro).
