He served in the war of the Revolution and received a severe
wound at the battle of Guilford Cout House, under General Green,
in May 1781. DAR No. 50390.
William Lindsay (1721-92) served as major in the Virginia
militia under General Green. Severely wounded at the battle of
Guilford Court House. He was born and died in Virginia.
His first home was settled in Colchester, Prince William Co. Va
and what was called in his day a wealthy man. His children were
all born in Colchester, with the exception of the youngest ones.
In the time that he resided in Colchester, it was the shipping
port of the Potomac as it was situated on the Occoquan river
which ran into the Potomac. There is a tradition in the family
that William made two or three fortunes and lost two or three.
His latter home was in Fairfax county, some 10 or twelve miles
from The Mount. His plantation consisted of about a thousand
acrers, and on one of the elevated portions of this he erected
his house, which was called "Laurel Hill".
He died in prime of manhood of that painful disease, gout, about
the year 1792-1793, during the every early childhood of his
youngest children and was the first adult laid away in the
family burying ground on the plantation.
2 Infants unamed born in 1767 and 1783 died young.

"Laurel Hill" was in what is now Lorton,Va. A Wash. DC prison
facility is now on at least part of the site.
From: Kitty - [email protected] "DAR erected a plaque at 'Laurel
Hill' his plantation in what is now Lorton, VA, where the now
defunct Lorton Reformatory is standing. I have personally
visited the old home, which back in the early 1920's was
renovated for the Lorton Superintendent and his family to live
in. I have photos of the old house, also a photo of the DAR
marker. DAR also put a marker there for his wife, Ann Calvert,
again a photo in my files. William Lindsay of Fairfax was my
5ggrandfather's brother, therefore my 5great uncle."
