" South Carolina Biographical Directory of Representatives , Volume II ( 1699-1775) Benjamin Coachman married Sarah Smith, daughter of George Smith and Elizabeth Allen. They had at least three children -- Benjamin, Jr., Nancy (m. Charles Glover) and Sarah (m. Charles Dupont). He was a planter in the Parish of St. James Goose Creek which elected him to the Twenty-second (1757-1760) and Thirty-second (1773) Royal Assemblies; however, he failed to qualify for the latter before the assembly was dissolved. As one of the subscribers to the Ludlam Fund to establish a school for the poor of the parish, he contributed 100 pounds for each of three years (1745-1747). He was a captain in the militia during the Revolution (1779). Benjamin Coachman died 4 May 1779, a wealthy man. In the months following his death, his
estate lent the state of South Carolina 180,000 pounds.

Son of Robert Lindsay Of "The Mount", and Susanna Opie? Mt Pleasant, Fairfax Co. VA. Item bequeathed in father's will:
"I give and bequeath unto my son William Lindsay ten pounds current money as it runs, and for him therewith to be content".

He served in the war of the Revolution and received a severe wound at the battle of Guilford Cout House, under General Green, in May 1781. DAR No. 50390.
William Lindsay (1721-92) served as major in the Virginia militia under General Green. Severely wounded at the battle of Guilford Court House. He was born and died in Virginia.

His first home was settled in Colchester, Prince William Co. Va and what was called in his day a wealthy man. His children were all born in Colchester, with the exception of the youngest ones. In the time that he resided in Colchester, it was the shipping port of the Potomac as it was situated on the Occoquan river which ran into the Potomac. There is a tradition in the family that William made two or three fortunes and lost two or three. His latter home was in Fairfax county, some 10 or twelve miles from The Mount. His plantation consisted of about a thousand acrers, and on one of the elevated portions of this he erected his house, which was called "Laurel Hill".

He died in prime of manhood of that painful disease, gout, about the year 1792-1793, during the every early childhood of his youngest children and was the first adult laid away in the family burying ground on the plantation.

2 Infants unamed born in 1767 and 1783 died young.

LINDSAY William Fam cem, Laurel Hill, Fairfax Co VA 55

"Laurel Hill" was in what is now Lorton,Va. A Wash. DC prison facility is now on at least part of the site.

From: Kitty - [email protected] "DAR erected a plaque at 'Laurel Hill' his plantation in what is now Lorton, VA, where the now defunct Lorton Reformatory is standing. I have personally visited the old home, which back in the early 1920's was renovated for the Lorton Superintendent and his family to live in. I have photos of the old house, also a photo of the DAR marker. DAR also put a marker there for his wife, Ann Calvert, again a photo in my files. William Lindsay of Fairfax was my 5ggrandfather's brother, therefore my 5great uncle."
