William Beverly WINSLOW

14 Jun 1814 - 16 Mar 1883

ID Number: I67797

  • RESIDENCE: Gallatin; Carroll Cos. KY
  • BIRTH: 14 Jun 1814, Port William, Gallatin, KY
  • DEATH: 16 Mar 1883, Carrollton, Carroll, KY
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2572]

Family 1 : Martha Jane WOOLFOLK

Notes

WILLIAM BEVERLY WINSLOW, father of Henry Moore and William Beverly Winslow, was born in Carrollton, KY., June 14, 1814; died there 16 Mar 1883; son of William Winslow and Peggy Mills, who emigrated from VA to KY, 1799; grandson of Col. Beverley Winslow of Spotsylvania, VA, an officer of the Revolutionary War, who married Katharine Robinson 23 Dec 1757, and died in Spotsylvania, 1793; his will probated 3 Feb, 1793. He was one of three sons, Beverley, Benjamin and Harry, who with their sister, Susanna, were the children of Benjamin Winslow of Essex, and wife, Susanna, daughter of Harry Beverley, married 22 Nov, 1726, as shown by Spotsylvania Records.

Benjamin Winslow, of Essex, was a son of Thomas, of Essex, 1703; his will proved there 1726; supposed to have been a descendant of John Winslow, who, with Richard Auborne, was granted 2,000 acres of land in New Kent Co., VA, 13 Feb 1667. He was also granted land, 6,000 acres, in New Kent, south side of Poison Black Swamp, with twelve headrights, 7 Aug 1669. (See Col. Grants, No. 6, pp. 213 and 245.) It is not known to be a fact, but it is generally supposed that the Virginia branch of the Winslows is of the same family as the Massachusetts branch. Five sons of Edward Winslow, of Durtwich, Co., Winchester, England, emigrated to America. One of them, EDWARD, came over on the Mayflower and became third Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. John may have been one of the younger sons, or a grandson of Edward Winslow.
