"Capt. John Rogers, the first of this family in Virginia, was
born about 1620, since on 4 Aug. 1665 he stated his age was 45.
He purchased 250 acres in Northumberland County from James
Claughton on 20 Jan. 1652/338 and on 13 Sept. 1654 took out a
patent for 50 acres on the south side of Claughton's Creek
adjoining this land and also for 250 acres adjoining.39 He
became a justice of Northumberland County in May 1655,40 was a
captain in the militia,41 and was a vestryman of Chicacone
Parish.42 On 1 May 1665 he took the appointed oaths as Sheriff
for the ensuing year.
On 30 Nov. 1656 Capt. John Rogers repatented the 300 acres he
had originally patented in 1654. He added another 200 acres on
31 Aug. 1657 and on 9 Jan. l662/3 repatented this land and his
250 acres originally patented in l654.
The name of his first wife Ellen is shown on the tombstones of
both husbands of their daughter Elizabeth (Rogers) Keene Banks
at Cypress Farm, Northumberland County.
Before Sept. 1668 he married his second wife Anne (______)
Temple Clay, widow of John Temple and Francis Clay.
John Rogers' will, which was presented for probate on 21 July
1680, is no longer of record in Northumberland County.
On 20 July 1654 John Rogers conveyed a calf to each of his
children Katherine, Elizabeth and John.
No further record of Katherine has been found.
Elizabeth married first William Keene and second Thomas Banks
and died in 1720 leaving numerous descendants.
John Rogers, Jr., married Joan _______ and died before 19 May
1680 when administration on his estate was granted to his widow.
They had at least two children, John and William, who were first
directed by the Court to be under the care of William Rogers and
later were placed under Richard Rogers and Mr. Keen, but both
probably died young.
Richard Rogers, under whose care John Rogers 3rd was placed, was
another son of Capt. John Rogers. He was a justice of
Northumberland County and was returned as elected to the House
of Burgesses on 6 March 1692/3 but on contest was not seated. He
married Jane Presley who with Thomas Banks presented his will in
Court on 10 Aug. 1697. She and her second husband Christopher
Neale were granted administration on the estates of her three
deceased children Richard, John and Hannah Rogers on 20 May
1703. They also had a son William Rogers, who died young, and
three daughters Elizabeth, Jane and Eleanor who survived and
left descendants.
William Rogers of Northumberland and later of Lancaster County
was another son of Capt. John Rogers. On 12 March 1677/8 Edward
Dale of Lancaster County conveyed to his daughter Elizabeth,
wife of William Rogers, Gent., son of Capt. John Rogers of
Northumberland County, a tract of 500 acres near the head of
Morattico, reserving the use of this land to himself and his
wife Diana during their lives. William Rogers continued to live
in Northumberland County for several years longer and on 17 May
1682 was sworn as a justice of the peace and as High Sheriff by
order of the Governor,62 but by 14 Dec. 1687 when he was
appointed a member of the troop of horse in the militia of
Lancaster County he had moved his residence.63 He died in
Lancaster County in 1714 and on 14 April 1714 administration on
a estate was granted to his second wife Mary Rogers.64 On 11
Aug. 1714 Elizabeth Banks informed the Court that "her dec'd
Brother Mr. Wm. Rogers dyed and left two small children which
she is doubtful will not have a suitable education." The Court
ordered that Lazarus Conway and William Rogers show cause why
Elizabeth Banks should not have the education of one of these
children, who are identified as Joseph and George Rogers.
"The will of Joseph Heale spoke of John Rogers, Joseph Rogers,
Edward Rogers and Hannah Blakemore as his cousin and the will of
John Heale made John Rogers his executor and overseer of his
minor nephew and principal heir, George Heale. Joseph Rogers was
one of the cousins named in the will of Joseph Haile. The
William Rogers who was ordered to appear in Court was the eldest
son of William and Elizabeth (Dale) Rogers. He died in 1728
leaving a will which named his five children and his brother
George Rogers.
The will of Edward Dale, dated 4 Aug. 1694 and proved 11 March
l695, makes it clear that he had only two daughters, Elizabeth
the wife of William Rogers and Katherine wife of Thomas Carter.
Ellen, wife of George Heale, must therefore have been the sister
of William Rogers. This identification is further strengthened
by the fact that the first wife of Capt. John Rogers was named
Ellen, by the fact that both George Heale and his wife
bequeathed to their daughter Ellen the land which had come from
her mother, and by the frequent use of the names Ellen and
Eleanor in both the Heale and Rogers families."
